City of Buckhannon proclaims April Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month

BUCKHANNON – Recently, the City of Buckhannon proclaimed the month of April as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. The city calls upon all citizens, community agencies, faith based groups, medical facilities, schools, and businesses to increase their participation in efforts to support families and prevent child abuse. This is in the hopes that awareness and prevention will strengthen the community in which we live. “It is a known statistic that effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships created among social agencies in the community,” Mayor David McCauley said.

Child abuse and neglect is a societal problem that needs involvement from everyone in the community. Child mistreatment occurs when people find themselves in stressful situations, without community resources. They feel helpless, and they do not know how to cope. The majority of child abuse cases stem from situations and conditions that are preventable in a community where people are engaged with one another and are supported. Child abuse and neglect not only directly harm the child but also increase the likelihood of criminal behavior, substance abuse, health problems, and other risky behavior such as smoking.

Through being “Partners in Prevention”, “Everyone can make a positive difference,” Mayor McCauley said. “We will make Thurs; April 25, Children’s Memorial Flag Day in Buckhannon. The flying of the memorial flag is to memorialize the thousands of children who die violently across the country each year. Hand in hand, with the Child Welfare League of America, the city will fly the flag as a way of memorializing the thousands of these teenagers and children. The Governor of West Virginia is asking counties and municipalities to display the Children’s Memorial Flag and arrange for events to memorialize these unfortunate children.”

“All citizens should become more aware of the negative effects of child abuse and its prevention within their communities”, Mayor McCauley said. Anyone can become involved in supporting parents to raise their children in a safe and nurturing environment. In this country, there are nearly three million children reported abused or neglected children each year.  According to statistics, a report is made regarding child abuse and neglect about every ten seconds in the United States. Everyone and anyone can help in preventing and reducing these numbers.
