City Council discusses department reports

BUCKHANNON — Thursday evening in Council Chambers, City Council held a brief meeting to discuss department reports. Due to the increasingly dangerous road conditions, the meeting had no recognized guests or public comments. Council received reports from the Public Works Department, the Finance Department and the Buckhannon Fire Department.

Amberle Jenkins reviewed the City’s financial report, listing revenues, expenditures, and budget adjustments. Council approved the 2021-2022 General Funds Budget revisions as presented.

Following, Jerry Arnold reported on all Public Works crews, updating Council on progress in the Waste, Water and Street departments. As deep snow began to take hold during the meeting, Arnold ensured the city that plow trucks were already working diligently to manage the roads. He urged the public to stay indoors and off the roads, if possible.

Concluding reports, Buckhannon Fire Department’s Chief JB Kimble also urged everyone to stay as safe as possible until the weather conditions improve. Kimble included December’s call volume in his report, total 93 responses during the past month. This totals nearly 1,300 for 2021. A full report from 2021 will be provided during the next City Council meeting. Kimble updated City Council on the department’s equipment, accreditation progress and the new firefighter’s evaluations.

All Council members urged all in attendance, in-person and online to drive home safely and to stay off the roads until they have been cleared. The next City Council meeting will take place on Thursday, January 20, at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers.
