Childers Run wreck results in fatality

BUCKHANNON — Yet another crash at Childers Run has claimed the life of a local man.

The fatal accident occurred Thursday evening at approximately 6:09 p.m. when John Goss, age 79, was attempting to cross the intersection of Route 33 at the Childers Run crossing. According to Buckhannon Police Department Officer A. McCauley’s report, Goss failed to stop his 2006 Toyota Avalon at the stop sign as he was coming from Childers Run and a 2011 Chevy Traverse traveling eastbound on Route 33 struck the car broadside.

In addition to BPD, the Buckhannon Fire Department, Ellamore VFD, and Upshur EMS responded to the scene. HealthNet was also to dispatched to the accident, but reportedly did not transport either driver. Goss was reportedly entrapped in the Avalon and had to be extricated from the wreckage. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital with fatal injuries where he was later declared deceased.

The Traverse was reportedly driven by 72-year-old Richard Norman, also of Buckhannon. Norman was also transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital and an update on his condition was unavailable. No passengers were in either vehicle, according to BPD.

Ellamore VFD and BFD firefighters kept everyone back from the vehicles for safety, as fluids were reportedly leaking from the car.

Tennerton Auto towed the Avalon, while Central Towing removed the Traverse from the highway.
