Charles J. Sturm


Mr. Charles J. Sturm, age 87 years, departed this life on Monday, February 24, 2020 in Whitetail Springs Alzheimer’s Senior Care Center in Pittsburgh, PA. 

He was born October 5, 1932 at Moatsville in Barbour County, WV, son of the late Virgil Glenn and Wava Grace Weaver Sturm. He is preceded in death by a brother, Emerald Browning “Brownie” Sturm of Chestnut Flats near Belington, WV. 

Charles was married on July 12, 1957 to Betty Joan Lantz who survives at their home in Pittsburgh, PA. He was a loving father to two daughters, Darla Main and husband, Glenn, of McMurray, PA and Allison Bennett and husband, Christopher, of Simpsonville, SC, and one son, Keith, and wife, Kelly, residing in The Woodlands, TX. Charles was blessed with five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.   

Mr. Sturm graduated from Belington High School in 1949. In 1953, he became a member of the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Division. He was discharged from service in 1955 with the rank of Corporal (T) and three medals, The National Defense Service Medal, the Army Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Most of his military tenure was spent in Germany. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and loved to travel throughout his life. 

Mr. Sturm held many occupations before retiring as owner of Tire Center in Buckhannon, WV. He was also the fleet manager for Baker Installations, Inc. of Pittsburgh, PA where he oversaw the purchase and maintenance of 500 vehicles. 

Many of his retirement years were spent in their home off the 4-H Camp Road near Philippi, WV. He and Betty moved to the Pittsburgh area in 2015 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. 

Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 12 noon until 2 p.m.  on Friday, February 28, 2020. Funeral rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. with the Pastor Jim Strawderman and Charles’s family officiating. Interment will follow in the Talbott Cemetery near Belington where full military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post #96 of Belington and the United States Army.
