‘Cats sweep the University of Mary as they wrap up spring break trip


LAKE MYRTLE (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team won two of their final three games on their spring break tour of Florida last weekend.

The ‘Cats earned a doubleheader sweep over the University of Mary on Friday by scores of 9-6 and 7-3 and then lost an extra inning battle with the University of Minnesota-Crookston by a 7-6 count in 11 innings.

The action left head coach Randy Tenney’s squad with a 7-9 record.

In Friday’s opener, Mary took a 2-0 lead on a two-run single by Daulton Sauce in the top of the first, but a Greg Smith solo home run cut the lead to 2-1 for Wesleyan in the bottom of the first.

Wesleyan took the lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs.

Eric Forbrick singled home Jonathan Cintron and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Travis Rennter.

That staked Wesleyan to a 3-2 lead.

A two-run double by Mary’s Connor Doll gave the lead back to Mary for a short time at 4-3 in the top of the fourth inning.

Wesleyan tied it at 4-4 in their half of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Forbrick that scored Tanner McCallister.

Wesleyan put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning with a five-run frame.

They took advantage of two Mary errors, a bases loaded walk to Ryan Kiser, a sacrifice fly by Antonio Vega and a one-run single by Alex Skinner.

Mary scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but Wesleyan held on for a three-run victory.

Forbrick and Skinner each had three hits in Wesleyan’s 11-hit attack.

Jake Bishop evened his record at 2-2 after pitching 1 2/3 innings of relief.

In the second outing, the game was scoreless after four innings of play.

Mary took the lead with a two-run fifth inning, but Wesleyan exploded for a six-run sixth inning.

Kiser had the big hit, a two-run triple, while Dominic Castello added a one-run double.

Mary added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to close it to 6-3, but Wesleyan added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when McCallister scored on an error on a ball put into play by Smith.

Wesleyan had six hits in the win with Smith, Cintron, Kiser, Castello, Nick Grotti and McCallister all getting one each.

Wesleyan used three pitchers in the win limiting Mary to just three hits.

Michael Maiolo earned the win to up his record to 2-1.

He went 5 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on two hits and fanned seven.

Kyle Riggleman and Castello combined to throw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Saturday’s affair saw both teams score in the first inning, but Wesleyan grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth on a one-run double by Vega and a one-run single by Skinner.

Minnesota-Crookston chased across four runs in the bottom of the fourth and one more in the seventh for a 6-3 lead.

Wesleyan deadlocked the game at 6-6 with a three-run eighth inning.

McCallister, Smith and Cintron each had a one-run single in the inning.

The game stayed tied until Minnesota-Crookston won it in the bottom of the 11th when Hunter Baldwin singled home Brock Reller.

Both teams collected 12 hits.

Forbrick led Wesleyan with three hits while Vega and Skinner each had two.

Jake Hakey (0-2) suffered the loss throwing 2/3 of an inning, giving up one earned run on two hits.

Wesleyan will return to action Saturday when they visit Shepherdstown for a doubleheader with Shepherd in their Mountain East Conference opener.

First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

They will stay on the road Sunday for a conference doubleheader with Fairmont State starting at 1 p.m.
