’Cats secure spot in MEC tourney despite loss to Glenville St. in final


BUCKHANNON    Despite ending the regular season with a 71-67 setback to Glenville State Saturday afternoon at the Rockefeller Center, West Virginia Wesleyan is among the 10-team Mountain East Conference Tournament field.

The Bobcats (7-21, 7-15 MEC) are the ninth seed and will face eighth-seed West Virginia State at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center.

On Saturday, the Bobcats honored their lone senior, Aaron Ariri, and enjoyed a 61-45 lead with under 10 minutes left in regulation.

But the Pioneers closed the game on a 26-6 surge to secure the four-point win.

A free throw by Wesleyan’s Nick Brooks with 32 seconds left in the game knotted the score 67-67, before Glenville State used a 3-pointer by Brooks Ely and free throw by Elisha Mayberry to seal the deal.

Darhius Nunn poured in 22 points for Glenville State (8-20, 6-16), Ely and Mayberry both chipped in 18 points and combined for 15 rebounds in the win.

Fred Brondsted paced the Bobcats with 16 points in the loss. Dusan Vicetic added 15 points, Luka Petrovic five assists and Ariri seven rebounds.
