‘Cats lose a pair of doubleheaders to Concord

Geovani Sostre hit a solo home run for the ‘Cats in Sunday’s second game against Concord in a Mountain East Conference match-up.

BUCKHANNON – Looking to make a move up the Mountain East Conference South Division standings hosting the last place Concord Mt. Lions in a pair of weekend doubleheaders, the West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team came up short.

On Saturday, Wesleyan lost a 13-3 game one decision and fell in the second game by a 5-3 score.

In Sunday’s action, Wesleyan dropped a 6-1 contest then dropped the nightcap by a 12-3 count.

The results left Wesleyan in last place in the South as they dropped to 3-15 overall and 3-15 in the MEC.

Concord leapfrogged into fourth place with an 8-16 mark overall and a 7-13 league mark.

Game one on Saturday was over before it got started as Concord scored 10 runs in the top of the first and added one more in the second for an 11-0 lead.

Cade Leach and Hunter Eplin each had one-run singles to put Wesleyan on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning making it an 11-2 game.

Geovani Sostre hit a one-run single for Wesleyan in the bottom of the sixth making it an 11-3 game but Concord scored two more in the top of the seventh for the 13-3 win.

Sostre led Wesleyan’s seven-hit attack with two hits.

Anthony Napoleon (1-2) started the game for Wesleyan and lasted just two innings as he gave up 10 earned runs on 11 hits.

In game two, Concord raced to a 3-0 after the top of the first, but Wesleyan responded with a pair of runs in their half of the inning behind a Sostre one-run single and Nick Grotti scoring on a fielder’s choice hit by Bryson Fluke to close the gap to 3-2.

Concord added an unearned run in the top of the second and scored one more in the top of the fifth for a 5-2 lead.

Grotti singled home Blake McMullen in the bottom of the fifth making it a 5-3 game but Wesleyan couldn’t get any closer.

Wesleyan had six hits in the contest with Grotti collecting three.

Jake Hakey (0-1) started the game and absorbed the loss for Wesleyan.

He went five innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits and struck out one.

In Sunday’s opener, Wesleyan managed just four hits and one run.

Concord built a 6-0 lead before Wesleyan avoided the shutout in the bottom of the seventh when Fluke singled home Adrian Delgado.

Eric Forbrick, Delgado, Leach and Fluke each had a hit for the ‘Cats.

Mitchell Courtney (0-5) started the game and went 4 2/3 innings for Wesleyan.

He gave up six earned runs on nine hits and whiffed three.

Concord took a 6-0 lead against Wesleyan in the nightcap but Wesleyan used the long ball as Delgado hit a two-run home run and Sostre followed with a solo shot to pull the ‘Cats to within three, at t-3.

It was the only inning Wesleyan would score in as Concord chased across three runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings for the 12-3 win.

Delgao had two of Wesleyan’s five hits.

Hunter Eplin (0-2) took the loss for Wesleyan getting the start and going 2 1/3 innings while giving up five earned runs on six hits and striking out two.

Wesleyan will return to action Wednesday hosting Frostburg State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
