‘Cats down Grand Valley State but drop DH to Findlay

KISSIMMEE (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team earned a 7-6 win over Grand Valley State Sunday by an 8-7 score but couldn’t keep the momentum going Monday as they dropped a doubleheader to the University of Findlay.

The ‘Cats lost the first game, 12-6, and lost the second outing, 7-5.

Against Grand Valley State, the ‘Cats fell behind in the second inning when the Lakers scored in the top of the second, but Ryan Kiser hit a sacrifice fly that scored Greg Smith in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1.

The Lakers chased three runs across in the top of the fourth for a 4-1 lead, but Smith had a two-run single to left field to close the gap to 4-3.

Wesleyan took their first lead with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth.

Ben Fulks hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kiser and Smith hit another two-run single that gave Wesleyan a 6-4 lead.

Antonio Vega blasted a home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a 7-4 game.

Grand Valley State scored twice in the top of the seventh to close it to 7-6, but Tanner McCallister doubled to left field scoring Dominic Castello to push the Wesleyan lead back to two, at 8-6.

Castello came on to pitch the ninth inning and gave up a run, but fanned Ryan Lorber leaving a runner at second to end the game.

Wesleyan collected 12 hits in the win with Smith and Vega each getting three.

Jake Bishop earned the win to even his record to 1-1 going five innings and allowing four earned runs on four hits while fanning three.

Parker Murdie and Chase Carpenter each had two hits for Grand Valley State.

Jared Skubic suffered the loss for the Lakers pitching 2 1/3 innings of relief.

In the first game on Monday between Wesleyan and Findlay, the two clubs combined to hit seven home runs with Findlay hitting four and Wesleyan three.

Findlay jumped on Wesleyan quickly in game one with four runs in the first inning, four more in the second and one in the third for a 9-0 lead.

Eric Forbrick hit a two-run home run for the ‘Cats in the bottom of the third to make it a 9-2 game.

Nic Varda hit a home run for Findlay in the top of the fourth only to see Wesleyan’s Nick Grotti smack one in the bottom of the inning as that made it a 10-3 game.

Smith blasted a two-run shot and Eric Forbrick a solo blast for the ‘Cats in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the Bobcats to within four, at 10-6.

Findlay though added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh for the 12-6 win.

Forbrick and Grotti each had two hits for Wesleyan.

Hunter Rotarius suffered the loss going six innings.

He surrendered nine earned runs on 13 hits and struck out six.

Ryan Johnson had two hits and three RBIs to lead Findlay.

Mark Delas earned the win for Findlay going five innings and giving up three earned runs on four hits.

In the second outing, Findlay took a 1-0 lead after a run in the bottom of the second, but Wesleyan scored twice in the top of the third when Smith and Kiser each knocked in a run.

The Bobcats made it 4-1 in the top of the fifth when Jonathan Cintron and Travis Renner scored on an error on a fielder’s choice hit by Kiser.

Findlay erupted for a four-run fifth inning for a 5-4 lead but Wesleyan tied it in the top of the sixth when McCallister homered to left field.

Findlay won the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wesleyan collected six hits in the loss with Renner getting two of them.

Jake Hakey suffered the loss for Wesleyan pitching the sixth inning and giving up two earned runs on three hits.

Tyler Burley and Tyler Archambea each had three hits for Findlay.

Jordan Bekier earned the win tossing one inning of relief.

The action left the Bobcats with a 3-6 record heading into Tuesday’s game with Ashland.

The ‘Cats will return to action today when they play conference rival Wheeling Jesuit in Winter Haven.

First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3:30 p.m.

They will then face Minnesota State-Mankato Thursday at  10:30 a.m.
