Petrovic’s late trey difference in road victory over Golden Eagles

BUCKHANNON – West Virginia Wesleyan used a strong first half to claim an 84-70 win over West Virginia State Saturday in Mountain East Conference play at the Rockefeller Center.

The Bobcats also knocked off homestanding Charleston, 70-67, on Thursday on Luka Petrovic’s 3-pointer with just two seconds remaining in regulation. Coach Jack Meriwether’s squad is now 5-17 overall and 5-11 in MEC games.

After the game was tied at 15-15, Wesleyan built a 45-29 advantage at the halftime break in Saturday’s win over the Yellow Jackets and never looked back.

The Bobcats shot 59 percent from the floor in the win and led by as many as 19 points before State made a late rally.

Dusan Vicentic paced Wesleyan with 18 points. Nick Brooks added 17, followed by Aaron Ariri and Luka Petrovic with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Petrovic recorded a team-high six rebounds.

Pat Johnson-Agwu scored 22 points for the Yellow Jackets (12-9, 10-6).  Ernest Jenkins netted 21 points with Isaiah Noel chipping in 14.

Thursday night’s win was decided on Petrovic’s trey that stunned the Golden Eagles, who had led the entire game for all but six minutes.

The Bobcats shot 49 percent from the floor in the victory and were paced by Vicentic with 22 points. Petrovic added 14 with Luke Layhew and Kam Copper netting 10 points apiece. Cooper and Petrovic both tallied seven rebounds over the course of the contest.

Austin Howard scored 16 points in the loss for Charleston (12-9, 8-7). Kier Anderson added 11 points. Lamont McManus drained 10 while grabbing eight boards.

Wesleyan will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Urbana for a MEC contest.
