Calef-Boring scores 26 as JV Buccaneers down Knights, 59-54


KINGWOOD – Zach Calef-Boring lit up the scoreboard for 26 points to help lead the Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Buccaneers to a 59-54 victory over the homestanding Preston Knights Tuesday night in Kingwood.

The Bucs almost wasted the impressive effort from Calef-Boring after building a big lead after three quarters of action.

They led by a 53-34 score after three quarters but almost let Preston catch them holding on for the five-point win.

The Bucs nearly doubled up Preston in the first quarter, winning it by a 22-12 margin.

Calef-Boring went off for 10 points in the first quarter while Shawn Blandino added four, Shelton Thropp and Josh Nesbitt three each and Oliver King two.

The Bucs built onto their lead taking the second quarter by a 20-12 score.

Calef-Boring continued with the hot hand with 12 points while Blandino contributed with four points and Wilbur Snider and Thropp each put in two.

Buckhannon-Upshur owned a 42-24 lead at the break.

The Bucs edged Preston in the third quarter by an 11-10 margin with Blandino putting in seven points and King and Calef-Boring two each.

The fourth quarter saw the Bucs manage just two field goals and two free throws as they held on for the win.

Gage Raschella had a basket and two free throws for four points while Calef-Boring put in two free throws.

Following Calef-Boring in the scoring column for the Bucs were Blandino with 15 points and Thropp with five points.

Mason Moats and Jaden Hawkins led Preston with 16 points apiece.

The Bucs, now 1-1 on the season, will return to action today when they host Robert C. Byrd at 5:45 p.m.
