TENNERTON — With the conclusion of the 2022 West Virginia boy’s prep baseball season, postseason awards and honors were announced by the Big 10 Conference earlier this week. North Marion’s Cole Malnick was named Conference Player of the Year, while Bridgeport collected a pair of honors as Ben McDougal was named the Conference Pitcher of the Year and the Indians’ head coach Robert Shields was named the Big 10 Conference Coach of the Year.
Junior Zach Calef-Boring was named to the Big 10 All-Conference Second-Team after an outstanding 2022 season. Calef-Boring, a second-team West Virginia All-State performer as a sophomore, turned in a solid encore performance this year acting as head coach Adam Squires team’s most consistent bat, while also providing a strong defensive presence in the outfield.
Calef-Boring collected second-team All-Conference honors after batting 42-101, (.416 batting average), scoring 33 runs, while driving in 15 RBIs, and stealing 22 total bases this season. Throughout the course of the season, the efficient junior outfielder had no trouble getting on base, hitting countless singles, 10 doubles, and 4 triples, while only being struck out twice.
Calef-Boring put his versatility on display this year with several strong showings on the mound for coach Squires team. As a pitcher, Calef-Boring picked up a pair of wins during a complete game against Brooke County and the rivalry game with Lewis County. The Junior also had strong outing vs. Huntington in McDonald’s Classic, pitching six innings, only allowing 4 hits and a single run.
Calef-Boring was the only Buccaneer to nab All-Conference honors, in spite of several individual standout seasons from members of coach Squires’ 10-19 B-UHS team this past season.
