Bucs’ wrestling team finishes with 3-2 record in Grafton Duals

GRAFTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School varsity wrestling team traveled to Grafton last Thursday, December 30, 2021, to take part in the Grafton Duals meet. Despite not bringing a full roster to the meet, missing wrestlers in the 120, 170, 182, and 195-pound weight classifications due to either sickness or injury, the Bucs’ wrestlers compiled a 3-2 record on the mat against some of the state’s top competition. Their strong showing in Grafton sets the Bucs up for what promises to be a challenging run down the stretch of the 2021-22 season.

First, the Bucs took care of business against the meet’s host, Grafton, securing a 42-19 victory. Next, the Bucs dropped a hard-fought battle to AA’s #3-ranked team, the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears, 44-27. The Bucs’ wrestlers rebounded in emphatic fashion against their next opponent, Weir, convincingly winning 46-16. In their fourth match of the Grafton Duals, the Bucs found themselves up against AA’s #6-ranked team, the Braxton County Eagles. The Bucs couldn’t quite overcome the challenge the Eagles posed, losing 48-24. The Bucs ended the meet with a huge win over A’s #2-ranked wrestling team, the Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights, 42-30. 

The Bucs had 10 wrestlers travel to compete in the Grafton Duals. Those 10 athletes combined for 33 wins during the meet. Ian Cornett (106-pound weight classification) left Grafton boasting a 3-2 mark, recording 2 takedowns, 5 escapes/reversals, and 1 fall to chip in 18 total team points. Liam Garcia (113) finished the Grafton Duals with a flawless 5-0 record, posting 5 escapes/reversals and 1 fall, tallying 30 total team points to lead the Bucs. Colton Wendling (126) ended the meet with a 1-4 record, posting a takedown and an escape/reversal on his way to adding 6 total team points. Brodee Kennedy (132) wrestled his way to a 4-1 finish, highlighted by 4 escapes/reversals and 2 falls, putting up 21 total team points for the Bucs in the meet. Tucker Hurst (138) finished with a 3-2 mark in the meet, recording 4 takedowns, 4 escape/reversals, and 2 falls, contributing 18 total team points. Nathan Cornett (145) posted a perfect 5-0 mark, highlighted by 4 takedowns, 2 escapes/reversals, and 2 falls, while adding 27 total team points. Luke Bohnsack (152/160) finished the meet with a 3-2 mark, recording 4 takedowns and a team-high 7 escapes/reversals to add 16 total team points. Trevor Miller-Waycaster (160/170) finished the meet 0-5 with 2 escapes/reversals. Alex Bennett (220-285) wrestled his way to a perfect 5-0 mark, recording 4 takedowns and 4 falls on his way to matching Liam Garcia’s team-high 30 total team points to lead the Bucs.

Jeremiah Thompson (220-285) finished the trip to Grafton with a 4-1 record, 4 takedowns, 3 escapes/reversals, and a fall to add 24 total team points to wrap up the Bucs’ trip to Grafton.
