Bucs win season opener against Lewis County 62-56

TENNERTON – With a pair of starters sidelined for their 2018-19 debut, Buckhannon-Upshur head basketball coach Travis Foster turned to his sophomore class to pick up the slack and did they ever in a 62-56 victory over the Lewis County Minutemen Tuesday night.

The foursome of super sophomores – Ryan Hurst, Zach White, Will McCauley and Josh Loudin scored 35 of the Bucs 62 points and grabbed 16 of the Bucs’ 34 rebounds.

Hurst scored a game-high 17 points to lead the charge while White poured in nine points, McCauley seven and Loudin five.

They were pressed into action as senior guard Dawson Lilly continues to rehab from a broken hand and junior center Brayden Cutlip dressed for the game  but only played four minutes as he continues to recover from an illness.

The Bucs started off strong taking a 7-2 lead with Jacob Loudin scoring on a lay-up and Tyler Sandreth hitting a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws.

Lewis County took the momentum away from the Bucs as they outscored them the rest of the quarter by an 18-6 margin to take a 20-13 lead.

The Bucs dominated the second quarter outscoring the Minutemen by a 21-8 margin.

Down 24-17, the Bucs went on a 12-0 run over a four-minute span for a 29-24 lead.

Ryan Strader tipped in a put back for the Bucs to close the half as they held a 34-28 advantage at the intermission.

Up 36-32, Hurst uncorked a trey, White made a free throw and Hurst came back with a lay-up to treat the Bucs to a 42-32 advantage with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Lewis County though finished the frame on a 10-0 run to deadlock the game at 44-44 heading into the final eight minutes of action.

Jacob Loudin made a free throw to start the fourth quarter and then turned in a three-point play making another free throw after scoring on a  lay-up to give the Bucs a 48-44 advantage.

Kyle Gannon hit a 3-pointer for Lewis County to make it a 48-47 contest, but Sandreth answered with his own trey and White scored on a short jumper to extend the B-U lead to 53-47 with 4:57 remaining in the game.

Leading 55-50, Hurst uncorked another 3-pointer to give the Bucs a 58-50 advantage with 4:14 left in the contest.

Lewis County closed it to 60-54, but Strader calmly sank two free throws to put the Bucs ahead by six, at 62-54, with 1:07 remaining.

The Minutemen put in a lay-up at the buzzer to account for the final score.

Sandreth followed Hurst in the scoring column with 14 points.

White just missed a double-double as he grabbed nine rebounds to go with his nine points.

Strader added eight rebounds to go along with four points.

Jacob Loudin contributed six points and five assists.

The Bucs connected on 23 of their 44 field goal attempts shooting 52.3 percent.

Lewis County made good on 21 of their 53 attempts for a 39.6 shooting percentage.

Gannon paced the Lewis County offense with 18 points while Bradley Smith had 11.

The Bucs will return to action today when they visit Morgantown for a 7:30 p.m. contest with the University Hawks in a non-conference game.
