WESTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur varsity basketball team (2-1) traveled to Weston for a showdown against the Lewis County Minutemen (1-1) Wednesday night. The Bucs easily handled rival Lewis County, winning by a final score of 62-46 to move to 3-1 so far on the season.
The Bucs wasted no time getting off to a fast start, scoring 21 first quarter points to jump out to a 21-7 lead early. The Bucs cooled down significantly in the second quarter, bring outscored by the Minutemen 11-8 in the period. Going into the locker-room for halftime, the Bucs found themselves clinging to a 29-18 lead.
The Bucs reestablished a rhythm in the third quarter, slightly out scoring the Minutemen to build on their lead going into the fourth quarter. The Bucs finished the game strong in the final period in route to winning the game, 62-46.
Senior guard Harrison Walker continued his hot scoring start to the season, scoring 20 points to pace the Bucs offensively. Senior forward Lamar Hurst finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds, including 11 in the first quarter alone. Sophomore Ian Strader earned the start for the Bucs. He took advantage of his opportunities finishing the game tallying a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Sterlin Thropp narrowly missed out on the double-digit scoring milestone, finishing with 9 points. Junior point guard Zach Calef Boring finished the game with 4 points, while senior guard Mason Hyre scored 2 points on the night to round out the scoring numbers for the Bucs.
