MORGANTOWN — Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster was hopeful his Buccaneers could not only compete but defeat the Class AAAA No. 2 Morgantown Mohigans Monday night in Morgantown.

The Bucs entered the game cracking the Class AAAA Top 10 at number 10 and pulled off an upset of Parkersburg South on Saturday.

But it wasn’t meant to be for Foster and his Bucs as Morgantown raced out to a 29-9 lead after one quarter of play and went on to win an 82-64 decision.

B-U went down 9-0 before Will McCauley put them on the board with a pair of free throws 2:33 in.

The Mohigans then went on an 8-0 run for a 17-2 lead before Ryan Hurst made an outside jumper for the Bucs with 2:56 showing on the first-quarter clock.

A Sterlin Thropp three-pointer made it a 26-9 game but Morgantown’s Alec Poland countered with a three pointer to make it a 29-9 game at the end of the first quarter.

The Bucs shot them back into the game somewhat with the three after Morgantown scored the first four points of the second quarter for a 33-9 lead.

Ryan Hurst uncorked a pair of three-pointers and Lamar Hurst knocked down a baseline jumper for an 8-0 B-U run closing the gap to 33-17.

After a Morgantown basket, Hurst nailed another three pointer, Josh Loudin made two free throws and Lamar Hurst drained a trey to bring the Bucs within 10, at 35-25, with three minutes remaining in the half.

Lamar Hurst fired in another trey, and after a Morgantown hoop, Ryan Hurst hit an outside jumper to narrow the lead down to just nine at 39-30.

Morgantown ran off five straight points before Ryan Hurst wrapped up the first half with a lay-up to keep the Bucs down by 12 at the break, at 44-32.

Morgantown hit a pair of baskets to start the fourth quarter, but Ryan Hurst hit another trey and Loudin put in a jumper to bring the Bucs within 11, at 48-37, but they could never get any closer as Morgantown went on a 9-0 run for a 57-37 advantage.

Lamar Hurst put in consecutive baskets for the Bucs making it a 57-41 game, but Morgantown ended the quarter on a 11-3 run for a 68-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Morgantown took a 78-48 lead before the Bucs went on a 6-0 run behind baskets by Ryan Hurst, Loudin and Zach White.

That made it a 78-54 contest.

The Bucs ended the game on a 10-4 run.

Ryan Hurst led the Bucs in scoring with 20 points while Lamar Hurst had 14.

Loudin had a double-double for the Bucs with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Alec Poland had a game-high 20 points for Morgantown.

The loss dropped the Bucs to 3-2.

They were slated to play Liberty on Tuesday and visit Fairmont Senior on Thursday.

They will return to action Tuesday visiting East Fairmont for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
