TENNERTON — Head coach Patty Wager’s Buckhannon-Upshur High School track team picked up another win in the small seven-team meet as the Buccaneers hosted at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Field last week on Tuesday, April 26. The Bucs collected seven individual event wins and also saw four relay teams take home wins as they outclassed the competition. The Lady Bucs collected 178 team points, just barely edging out second-place East Fairmont’s score of 156 team points. Webster County took a third-place finish with 75 team points, Fairmont Senior finished fourth with 71 team points, Tucker County finished fifth with 31 team points, Elkins finished sixth with 27 team points, while South Harrison with 16 team points rounded out the seven team field.
Junior Taiwo Thropp posted a time of 11.67 seconds narrowly beat out second-place finisher, senior Camden Snyder’s time of 12.23 seconds to win the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.44 seconds, securing the Lady Bucs’ first of many wins of the day. Taiwo followed his exceptional performance in the 100-meter dash with a equally impressive outing the 200-meter dash, where his time of 23.25 seconds beat out fellow junior classmate Shawn Blandino’s time of 23.30 seconds in a photo finish for claim his second win of the day. Senior Sterlin Thropp won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.61 seconds to keep the Buccaneer dominance going.
Junior Jordan Gillum won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.88. Freshman Jack Waggy won the 3200-meter run in 10:42.32. Freshman Carter Zuliani picked up a win in the 110-meter hurdles, clearing the 39” obstacles in just 17.24 seconds. Sophomore Dirk Riley won the discus toss event with a throw that traveled 122’ 7” and one-half inches to claim the Bucs the seventh and final individual event win on the day.
Coach Wager’s relay combinations found a great deal of success, picking up four wins Tuesday evening. The 4x100-meter relay team, consisting of Snyder, the Thropps and Blandino posted a combined time of just 45.05 seconds to defend their home field and collect the team’s first relay win of the evening.
The 4x200-meter relay team, comprised of senior Julien Larcher, the Thropps and Blandino cruised to a win with a combined time of 1:33.42 to pick up the Bucs second relay win. The 4x400-meter relay team of Gillum, Larcher, Blandino and Sterlin Thropp dominated the field en route to an easy win with a combined time of 1:33.42, capturing the Bucs third relay win of the evening.
Finally, the 4x800-meter relay team of Larcher, Gillum, Waggy and Leonard capped off the overall dominant performance by the Bucs, with a combined time of 8:33.47. The eleventh and final win wrapped up a brilliant performance for the Buccaneer track team, who has up to this point in the season proved themselves as one of the best track teams in the state. Wager and her Bucs will look to keep stringing together high-level performances as they barrel towards the postseason and a prospective trip to Charleston for the state meet.
