TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School Boys Tennis Team was faced with a pair of big tests last week, in the form of matches against Liberty and University.

Under the guidance of Head Coach D.J. Rock, the team has been playing exceptionally well since the early stretch of the 2022 season. In their first match of the week against Liberty Tuesday, March 30, the Buccaneers cruised to an easy team win in dominant fashion, not dropping a single match to the Mountaineers. All the top-seeded Bucs won their matches 8-0, sealing the clean 7-0 sweep of the Mountaineers.

In doubles action, the Buccaneers tandems of Aden Pitts and Caden Andrick, as well as Jude Snyder and Donovan Cutlip both won their games on the #1-seed and #3-seed line respectively, while the #2-seeded duo of Mauricio Menedez and Hank Phillips won by forfeit.

Coming off a stellar all-around team performance against the Mountaineers, the members of the B-UHS Boy’s Tennis Team turned their collective attention towards their next opponent on the schedule, the University Hawks.

Coach Rock’s Buccaneers easily took care of business in the singles match-ups, as all four of the top-seeded Bucs claimed victories in their respective matches. Aden Pitts, the #1-seed boy’s single player, had the most difficult pairing and still won rather easily by way of an 8-4 final tally. While Andrick, Menendez and Phillips all collected multiple point wins, ensuring the Buccaneers took the team win, it is interesting to note that the Buccaneers success in the singles match-ups did not exactly translate to the doubles games.

While the lead duo of Pitts and Andrick claimed an 8-3 win, the #2 and #3-seeded duos of Menendez/ Phillips and Tommy Swift/ Cutlip lost their games by scores of 8-6 and 8-1, respectively. While the team is individually performing almost flawlessly, it seems that continuing to improve the chemistry between the lower-seeded doubles partners will be a key for Coach Rock’s team to sustain the team success they have enjoyed in the early parts of the season.
