Bucs start year with win over Knights, but tumble to Mohigans and Huskies

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur baseball team started their season off two weeks ago with a 1-2 mark.

They opened on April 13 at home with Preston and won a 12-2 decision over the Knights.

They followed that up on that Wednesday and Thursday with a pair of road losses to the Morgantown Mohigans and North Marion Huskies.

The Bucs dropped a 10-0 decision to Morgantown and lost a 14-3 decision to North Marion.

Against Preston, the Bucs took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with the big hit belonging to Elijah Arbogast who hit a two-run single.

Preston chased across two run in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-2 game but the Bucs responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth taking a 7-2 lead.

The Bucs plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 12-2 lead ending the game on the mercy rule.

The Bucs had nine hits in the contest with Ian Donnen, Arbogast, and Zach White each getting two.

Arbogast earned the win going 3 2/3 innings in the start. He gave up two earned runs on two hits and fanned seven.

The Bucs gave up 12 walks in their loss to Morgantown.

The Bucs actually outhit Morgantown by a 5-4 margin but couldn’t get a runner to cross home plate.

Morgantown scored three in the first, one in the second and four in the third for an 8-0 lead.

They added one more in the fourth and sixth as the game ended on the 10-run mercy rule.

Cam Tenney led the Bucs at the plate with two hits.

Isaac Lane suffered the loss on the mound for the Bucs.

He got the start and went 2 2/3 innings giving up three earned runs on two hits while fanning five.

Against North Marion, the Bucs fell behind by a 14-0 after four innings of play.

The Bucs managed to get three runs in the top of the fifth.

Zach Calef-Boring led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch and Lane hit a two-run double that scored Tenney and Parker Browning.

The Bucs managed just two hits, the double by Lane and a single from Arbogast.

Hurst suffered the loss on the mound starting the game and going three innings. He gave up five earned runs on six hits while fanning three.

The Bucs were slated to play Lewis County last Saturday and Grafton, Liberty and Fairmont Senior last week.

They were slated to host East Fairmont yesterday.

They will visit Robert C. Byrd today at 5 p.m. and host Elkins Wednesday at 5 p.m.
