MORGANTOWN — Head Coach Mike Donato and his 2022 edition of the Buckhannon-Upshur High School Buccaneers soccer team got their season started with a trip to play last season’s defending Class-AAA state champion, Morgantown last Wednesday, August 17.
Coach Donato’s gritty Buccaneers squad kept the potent Mohigan attack off the board until the last minute of the first half, when Morgantown scored the only goal of the game. Aside from that lone miscue, the Buccaneers defense, led by veteran goalkeeper Dalton Auvil had a very strong performance, shutting the defending champions out in the second half. Auvil faced 11 shots on goal and won the battle more often than not, recording 10 saves.
Despite their defensive back line keeping things close, the Buccaneers couldn’t quite find the back of the net in last Wednesday’s season opener. The Buccaneers were outshot 11 to 5, as a strong Morgantown defense stymied their offense.
Despite the loss, Coach Donato’s Buccaneers have plenty of things to be optimistic about, especially in terms of their defensive performance. With the loss, the Buccaneers drop to 0-1 on the young season.
