Bucs place fourth at Region III Swimming Championships

Dane Ammons of the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers will be one of four B-U swimmers going to the state championships next week in Morgantown. Ammons will be part of the 200-yard medley relay unit that is ranked ninth.

BUCKHANNON – The six-person Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer swim team continues to impress as the unit finished in a fourth-place tie in the Region III Championships Saturday afternoon at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

The Bucs finished in a fourth-place tie with Notre Dame with 47 points.

Bridgeport took first with 173 points while Robert C. Byrd was second with 74 and Elkins was third with 63.

“The boys had a great meet, again with all the them dropping a time in at least one individual event,” remarked B-U head coach Will Squires. “They were small all season but still managed to score well as a team with only six.”

Sam Squires and Drew Griffith had the top showings for the Bucs as both placed fourth in their respective events.

Squires took fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.78 while Griffith took fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a clocking of 1:03.70.

Squires also earned a fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.33) while Will Sparks claimed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.33).

Sparks also took seventh in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.10.

Garrett Butler earned a sixth and seventh place in his two events.

He took sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:14.63) and seventh in the 500-yard butterfly (6:19.57).

The other top 10 finish belonged to Dane Ammons as he placed seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.72).

The two B-U relay teams had solid showings.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Ammons, Squires, Griffith and Sparks took second with a time of 1:42.42 while the same foursome competed in the 200-yard freestyle relay and claimed sixth with a time of 1:49.44.

The Bucs placed four of their swimmers in the state meet next week for five events.

Individually, Squires will compete in the 100-yard breaststroke ranked ninth and the 50-yard freestyle ranked 11th.

Sparks will compete in the 100-yard backstroke (20th) while Griffith will compete in the 100-yard butterfly (22nd).

The 200-yard medley relay team of Dane Ammons, Squires, Griffith and Sparks will compete being ranked ninth.

The state meet will be held on the campus at West Virginia University at the Natatorium and will be held next Thursday and Friday.
