Bucs overcome slow start to down Preston, 6-0

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Milo Baumann (13) gets his leg hooked by Preston’s Justin Chase (11) as he tries to move to the goal during the first half of their Big 10 Conference tilt Tuesday evening. Baumann had a goal as the Bucs downed Preston, 6-0.

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Bucs overcame a slow start to defeat the Preston Knights Tuesday evening by a 6-0 score in Big 10 Conference action.

The Bucs led by just a 1-0 score at the half, but dominated play in the second half scoring five goals in the victory.

“We had a very slow start, almost similar to how we finished up on Saturday's game,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “It just seemed our flow wasn't completely there and we were a step behind. We made a few formation adjustments and talked things out at the half and we played much better in the second half. Stringing passes, getting the wings and outside backs involved in the attack, and better communication really sparked our play and we looked more like ourselves. Preston always comes in with a good defensive game plan. Coach Russell always has his guys prepared and did a good job of testing us early on.”

The lone goal of the first half belonged to Lane Tenney, who scored on a penalty kick in the 11th minute.

Zach Calef-Boring got things started for the Bucs in the second half just six minutes in when he played a negative ball from the left side and finished with a shot to the back post.

Just two minutes later, Milo Baumann played a through ball from Caden Andrick and chipped it over the head of Preston keeper J. T. Flores to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead.

Ryan Hurst played a through ball from Andrick, dribbled it to the left side and finished with a goal in the 53rd minute to up the B-U lead to 4-0.

Hurst then scored an unassisted goal in the 75th minute when he cleaned up a deflection by Flores and finished with a shot to the near post.

That gave the Bucs a 5-0 advantage.

Reis Leonard wrapped up the scoring with two minutes left when he played a pass over the Preston defenders and scored with a shot over Flores.

The Bucs owned a 26-3 lead in shots-in-goal and a 16-4 lead in corner kicks.

Dalton Auvil made three saves for the Bucs in the shutout win while Flores stopped 20 shots.

The Bucs were guilty of five fouls while Preston committed two.

The Bucs, now 2-0-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Big 10, will return to action today as they host Webster County at 6 p.m.
