Bucs lose two close ones to ranked opponents South Charleston, Jefferson

Lamar Hurst (13) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers goes in for a one-handed dunk in front of Jefferson’s Jaden Butts (22) and Daion Taylor (1) during the third quarter of their non-conference basketball game Saturday afternoon at the high school. Hurst had a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds, but the Bucs dropped an 86-84 decision.

TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster has gone out of his way to schedule the best teams in the state he could find.

With a couple of games lost for various reasons on the B-U schedule, Foster went and found replacement games with a pair of top 11 Class AAAA teams in South Charleston (No. 9) and Jefferson (No. 11).

While the Bucs lost both games in close contests, a 68-62 loss to South Charleston and an 88-86 thriller to Jefferson, Foster is hoping the games prepared the Bucs even more for today’s sectional opener with the Bridgeport Indians.

“We gambled playing these two games,” explained Foster. “A lot of teams haven’t played in the last two weeks wanting to stay healthy for the post-season. We felt it was necessary to keep going and play the best teams in the state and be at the top of our game for Bridgeport and the sectional tournament, which is really what it is all about.”

Against South Charleston, the Bucs fell behind by a 25-8 margin after one quarter as the hosts came out on fire and knocked down four three-pointers in the first four minutes of the game.

The Bucs closed it to a 10-point game on a trey by  Harrison Walker, at 31-21, but South Charleston closed the half on a 7-2 run for a 38-23 lead at the break.

The Bucs trailed by 18 entering the fourth quarter, 57-39, before making a furious rally in the fourth quarter.

The Bucs started the quarter on a 6-0 run getting two points from Ryan Hurst and four points from Lamar Hurst, and after a South Charleston basket, the Bucs went on a 10-0 run        making it just a six-point deficit, at 59-53, with four minutes remaining.

A three-pointer by Ryan Hurst brought the Bucs to within five, at 63-58, and baskets by Lamar Hurst and Zach White closed it to two points, at 64-62.

South Charleston converted two free throws and the Bucs turned the ball over on their next possession, which resulted in two more free throws for South Charleston as they held on for the win surviving the Bucs’ big rally.

Ryan Hurst and Walker both had 16 points while Lamar Hurst had 15.

Wayne Harris paced South Charleston with 20.

Against Jefferson, the Bucs played well early getting out to a 23-12 lead at the end of one quarter.

Jefferson put on a press defense in the second quarter which upset the Bucs’ rhythm as they trailed at the break by three, at 46-43.

B-U trailed going into the fourth quarter by eight, at 68-60, before mounting another late comeback like they did against South Charleston.

Still down by seven, at 76-69, with 3:53 remaining, Ryan Hurst made a lay-up, tossed in a free throw and Josh Loudin scored on a putback to make it a 76-74 game with 2:52 left.

Jefferson grew their lead back to seven at 83-76, but Ryan Hurst scored a lay-up and Lamar Hurst knocked down a jumper putting the Bucs down by three, at 83-80, with 39 seconds remaining.

After two free throws by Jefferson, Ryan Hurst made a lay-up making it an 85-82 game with 17 seconds to go.

Jefferson made one of two at the line making it a two-possession game as Lamar Hurst made a basket with a second remaining making it an 86-84 game as time expired.

Lamar Hurst had a double-double for the Bucs with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Jayden Wilkie, Cameron Johnson and William Shively all had 15 points for Jefferson.

The Bucs will host Bridgeport tonight at 7 p.m. in a sectional battle while Preston will face University in the other half of the bracket.

The sectional championship game is slated for Friday at the highest seed.
