Bucs hang with No. 1 Wheeling Park for a half but fall down the stretch, 76-59

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Kennedy Samargo (10) leaps in the air for a rebound during the Lady Bucs’ game Saturday evening with No. 1 Wheeling Park. Samargo had six points and 11 rebounds, but the Lady Bucs dropped a 76-59 decision to the top team in the state.

WHEELING – Wheeling Park is the No. 1 team in Class AAAA for a reason and her name is Lindsey Garrison.

The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs faced their toughest test of the young season traveling to Wheeling to face the Patriots, but they had no answers for the senior guard who scored 40 points including  hitting12 three-pointers in a 76-59 win over the Lady Bucs.

“She just didn’t miss,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle. “She was shooting three or four feet from beyond the arc and just had an unbelievable night.”

Despite Garrison’s huge game, the Lady Bucs were in the contest for the first half.

Gabby Parke hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Bucs an early 3-2 lead.

A three-pointer by Shelby McDaniels kept the Lady Bucs up by a 10-9 score with five minutes remaining, but it would be the last lead Buckhannon-Upshur held.

A lay-up by McKenzie Reynolds kept the Lady Bucs down by just two, at 18-16, but Garrison hit a jumper and then a three-pointer to make it a 23-16 game.

Parke went inside for two points to end the first quarter, keeping the Lady Bucs down by just five, at 23-18.

A basket by Kiara Woods kept Buckhannon-Upshur within four, at 28-24, but Naliah Lekanudos answered with a lay-up to put the score at 30-24, with 5:02 remaining.

Both teams went cold and neither squad scored over the next three minutes.

McDaniels ended the scoreless streak with a steal and lay-up and Kennedy Samargo drove the lane for two points as Buckhannon-Upshur pulled to within two, at 30-28.

Garrison and Reynolds traded threes and Garrison ended the half with another trey as Wheeling Park owned a 36-31 lead.

Wheeling Park started to pull away at the start of the third quarter as they opened the stanza on a 9-2 run hitting three treys for a 45-33 lead.

McDaniels knocked down a three for Buckhannon-Upshur but Wheeling Park countered with a 10-0 run for a 55-36 advantage with 3:53 remaining in the quarter.

Down 59-37, the Lady Bucs ended the quarter on a mini 5-0 run behind baskets from Kendal Currence, McDaniels and a free throw from Reynolds.

That cut the deficit down to 16, at 59-43.

The Lady Bucs though could never get closer than 16 points in the final quarter.

“We played with them the first half and gained a lot of confidence, so that’s good moving forward,” remarked Kittle.

McDaniels led the Lady Bucs with 14 points while Parke added 12.

Currence had a double-double for the Lady Bucs with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Behind Garrison in the scoring column for Wheeling Park was Isabella Abernathy with 19 points.

The loss dropped the Lady Bucs to 4-1.

Their games this week with Liberty and Fairmont Senior were postponed because of COVD-19 protocols.

They are scheduled to play again Friday night hosting East Fairmont.
