Bucs hang for a half but eventually fade to No. 1 Mohigans in regional co-final, 83-58

MORGANTOWN – For one half, the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers put a scare in the top team in the state in the Morgantown Mohigans in their Class AAAA regional co-final last Wednesday evening.

With a berth in the state tournament on the line, the Bucs trailed by just one at the half by a 32-31 score.

Morgantown however started knocking down everything and forcing Buckhannon-Upshur into some untimely turnovers and pulled away from the Bucs in the third quarter taking it by a 30-12 score and getting an 83-58 victory.

“We just wanted to focus on keeping it even in the first quarter because that is where it fell apart the first time,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster. In the Bucs regular-season game with Morgantown, they trailed 29-9 at the end of the first quarter.

“We were shooting well and taking good shots in that first half,” noted Foster. “We went into halftime with the message of not putting the ball in the floor, instead move without the ball and make them guard us. For some reason, we come out and try to dribble between five guys and they turn us over and that was it. Give them some credit though, they made us put it on the floor, we knew it was coming, and played right into it.”

Down 6-3 early, the Bucs went on a 10-0 run as Noam Keith put in a lay-up, Lamar Hurst drained a three-pointer, Zach White scored on a jumper and Ryan Hurst nailed a three-pointer to put the Bucs up 13-6 with four minutes gone in the first quarter.

Morgantown closed the quarter on a 12-4 run taking an 18-17 lead after eight minutes of action.

The Bucs were down 25-21 when Ryan Hurst uncorked a trey and White put in consecutive baskets to give the Bucs a 28-25 lead with 3:52 remaining in the half.

The Mohigans ended the half on a 7-3 run for a 32-31 lead at the break.

Morgantown started the second half on a 10-2 run for a 42-33 lead, and after two free throws from Keith, they went on a 7-2 run for a 49-37 lead with 2:50 remaining in the quarter.

Down 52-40, the Bucs saw the Mohigans wrap up the third quarter on a 10-3 run for a 62-43 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bucs could never get closer than 19 points in the final quarter.

Ryan Hurst led the Bucs with 22 points while Lamar Hurst added 16.

Brooks Gage scored 21 to lead Morgantown while Carson Poffenberger added 16.

Morgantown, the top seed in the Class AAAA Tournament, will play Woodrow Wilson in the first-round of the state tournament on Thursday.

The Bucs ended their year with a 12-8 record.

“It’s bitter-sweet,” concluded Foster. “We played the best schedule we could, grinded to the very end and seven of eight losses came to teams playing in the state tournament. I wish we could have had a true off-season with this team.”
