Bucs end regular season with five-game slide; will play UHS today in baseball sectional opener

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Isaac Lane (9) delivers a pitch against the Lincoln Cougars last Wednesday. The Bucs dropped a 7-6 extra-innings contest to the Cougars. The Bucs begin sectional play today visiting University.

TENNERTON – It wasn’t the way Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Adam Squires wanted to end his regular season.

The Bucs ended the regular season on a five-game losing streak.

They lost a game on May 20 on the road to University by a 5-2 score then dropped a home doubleheader on May 22 to John Marshall by 7-2 and 10-2 scores.

Last week, they lost on a 7-6 extra-inning affair to Lincoln on Wednesday and lost their regular-season finale to East Fairmont on the road Thursday by a 6-0 score.

The action left the Bucs with a 12-12 record going into sectional play that begins today.

Against University, the Bucs were behind 4-0 after five innings of play before getting on the scoreboard.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Zach Calef-Boring hit a single  and Jay Burnside drew a walk.

Calef-Boring scored on an error and Burnside coasted home on a single by Elijah Arbogast making it a 4-2 game.

The Bucs couldn’t get any closer as the Hawks added an insurance run in bottom of the sixth inning for the 5-2 win.

Calef-Boring led the B-U six-hit attack with two hits.

Isaac Lane suffered the loss in the start going 2 1/3 innings. He gave up just one earned run on three hits while striking out two.

The Bucs produced just four runs in their doubleheader with John Marshall.

They were behind 5-0 in the bottom of the third of game one when the scored both of their runs in game one behind a two-run single from Elijah Arbogast.

John Marshall would go on to score a run in the top of the fourth and sixth inning for their 7-2 win.

B-U had eight hits as no one had a multi-hit game for the Bucs.

Arbogast took the loss in the start, going two innings and giving up five unearned runs on three hits while striking out three.

In game two, the Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Calef-Boring singled, stole second and scored on Arbogast’s single to right field.

John Marshall scored three in the second, six in the third and one more in the fourth for a 10-1 lead.

The Bucs scored the game’s final run in the bottom of the seventh when Parker Browning singled and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Bucs had just three hits with Calef-Boring, Arbogast and Browning each getting one.

Burnside started the game and absorbed the loss. He went two innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits while striking out one.

The Bucs were behind Lincoln by a 3-1 score before chasing across five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The highlight of the inning was a solo home run by Arbogast.

That treated the Bucs to a 6-3 lead, but Lincoln scored two runs in the top of the sixth and one more in the seventh to force extra innings and they won the game with an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning.

B-U out hit Lincoln by a 13-11 margin.

Cam Tenney led the offense with three hits while Calef-Boring and Arbogast each had two,

Arbogast suffered the loss pitching 1 1/3 innings and not allowing an unearned run on two hits.

Against the Bees, the Bucs struggled with one of the top pitchers in the region in East Fairmont’s Cole Petchel.

Petchel allowed the Bucs just two hits, singles by Calef-Boring and Burnside while striking out 14.

East Fairmont scored one in the bottom of the first, three in the bottom of the third and two in the bottom of the sixth for the win.

Burnside took the loss in a start, going 2 1/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on two hits while striking out three.

The Bucs will visit University today at 6 p.m. in the first game of the Region I, Section 2 baseball tournament.

The two winners will meet Wednesday while the two losers will play the same day in an elimination contest.
