Bucs beat Hawks in sectional opener, falls to No. 3 Morgantown on day two

MORGANTOWN – Casey Hamner and Cole Hoover each drove in three runs as the third-seeded Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers upset the second seeded University Hawks in the first round of the Region I, Section 2 baseball tournament at Mylan Park.

The Bucs scored early and often en route to a 10-5 victory over the Hawks.

In the winner’s bracket finals on Tuesday, the Bucs dropped a 9-0 verdict to the top seed and the state’s No. 3 ranked team Morgantown.

The Bucs were able to survive Monday despite making four errors, in part because University was guilty of five errors.

The Bucs dented the scoreboard first in the top of the first when Logan Bailey scored on a misplayed ball by Hoover.

The Bucs made it 2-0 in the top of the second when Logan Whitehair singled home Josh Riffle.

University scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the second for a 3-2 lead.

B-U answered quickly with three runs of their own in the top of the third.

Bailey and Seech both scored on a misplayed ball hit by Hoover and Hoover later scored on a double by Hamner.

That treated the Bucs to a 5-3 lead.

Hamner hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth scoring Tim Phillips extending the Buckhannon-Upshur lead to 7-3.

Bailey scored on another University error and Seech scored on a Phillips’ single to up the Buccaneer advantage to 9-3.

University chased across a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 9-5.

The Bucs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Nick Calef-Boring singled home courtesy runner Zach White.

University put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the seventh but B-U reliever Andrew Herron slammed the door shut on the Hawks.

The Bucs outhit the Hawks by a 10-6 margin.

Bailey collected three hits while Phillips, Hamner and Whitehair each had two.

“We didn’t play an entirely clean game defensively but our offense was able to make up for some of the errors,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Adam Squires. “Casey Hamner had a great night at the plate as did most of the team. We also did a great job of playing small ball and advancing runners.”

Whitehair earned the win going six innings.

None of the five runs he allowed were earned as he walked two and struck out five.

“Logan threw a great game,” remarked Squires. “He had three pitches working and was able to throw them all for strikes.  He worked ahead in the count and was able to keep their hitters off-balance all night.”

In Tuesday’s outing, the Bucs had their problems against Morgantown starting pitcher Carter Patrick as he limited them to just five hits in the shutout setback.

Morgantown put up four runs in the bottom of the second and never looked back.

They added one in the third and four more in the sixth for the 9-0 victory.

Herron had two hits while Calef-Boring, Hoover and Phillips each had one.

The Bucs were slated to play University again Wednesday night with the winner facing Morgantown Thursday in the title game

The ‘if’ game would be played today if Morgantown loses.
