TENNERTON – When the state COVID-19 metrics map was released last Saturday, it wiped out 16 football games including the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer’s road outing with University this Friday night.
Upshur, along with Doddridge, Harrison and Mingo were all listed in the orange category on the map.
Barbour, Berkeley, Cabell, Jackson, Kanawha, Putnam and Randolph Counties were in the gold category, meaning they can only play in-county or other gold county opponents.
The games canceled involving orange counties were Ravenswood at Doddridge County, Elkins at Bridgeport, Liberty at East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior at Robert C. Byrd, South Harrison at Tygarts Valley, Roane County at Lincoln, Tug Valley at Logan, Shady Spring at Mingo Central and Buckhannon-Upshur at University.
Games involving gold counties that were canceled were Ripley at Greenbrier East, Musselman at Wheeling Park, Albert Gallatin (Pa.) at Spring Mills, Oak Hill at Hurricane, Tolsia at Buffalo, Philip Barbour at Moorefield and Spring Valley at Cabell Midland.
A few teams were able to find replacement opponents for Friday night or this weekend.
Wheeling Park will now visit University, Oak Hill will face Spring Valley, Musselman will visit Hurricane and Tolsia will visit East Fairmont.
For the Bucs of head coach Duane Stoeckle, they will try again next Friday if Upshur returns to green, yellow or gold as they are scheduled to host Bridgeport at 7 p.m.
