Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School archers finish 12th in nation at 2019 National Archery Tournament

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School archers finished 12th in their division out of 255 teams in the 2019 National Archery in the Schools Tournament.

Reese Curry of the Buckhannon Academy placed 11th in the field of 1940 girls in the Elementary Division. She posted a score of 283, with 17 arrows in the 10 ring.

The Middle School turned in a score of 3338-170, just 87 points behind first-place Benton Middle School’s 3425-217.

Kaylin Walton and Elijah Bryant shared the scoring lead for the Middle School team. Both carded 288, with Walton holding a 19-18 edge in shots in the 10 ring.

“The kids did an outstanding job,” head coach Russ Warner said.

“I predicted that they would shoot a 3336, and they did better. Scoring 12th in the nation is something to be very proud of. Their score would have placed them second in our state -- in the High School division!”

The Middle School archers – as the West Virginia champions – were slated compete in the World meet the last weekend in July in Nashville (Tenn.).

“I believe they can again do very well in the World completion,” Warner said. “This is an exceptional group of kids. Over the next few years look for these kids to break a few state records!”
