Buckhannon-Upshur freshman hold off Lincoln to win opener, 61-55


SHINNSTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur freshman Buccaneers held off a late charge from the Lincoln Cougars for a 61-55 road victory Wednesday night in their 2021 debut.

The Bucs of first-year head coach Roberta Hatcher raced out to a 16-11 lead after one quarter of action with Bryson Johnston scoring seven points, Nathaniel Ringer putting in five, Ian Strader two and Jaden Westfall two.

The Bucs won the second quarter by a 16-8 score and extended their lead at the break to 13, at 32-19.

For the Bucs in the second quarter, Williams and Strader each put in five points while Johnston, Ringer and Blake Runyon each put in two points.

Buckhannon-Upshur won the third quarter by a 15-11 margin and pushed their lead to 17 points at the end of the third quarter, at 47-30.

Scoring for the Bucs in the third quarter were Westfall with six points, Williams with five, and Strader and Luke Yardley with two each.

The Bucs were outscored in the final quarter by a 25-14 count but held on for the six-point win.

Strader had six points in the fourth quarter before fouling out while Williams had three, Yardley and Ringer two each and Westfall tallied one.

The Bucs were led by Strader who scored 15 points while Williams collected 13.

Sears led Lincoln with 13 points.

The Bucs followed up their win with a scrimmage against Philip Barbour on Thursday. The game was slated to be a regularly scheduled game for the Bucs, but Philip Barbour didn’t have in enough practices for it to count as a regular-season contest.

The Bucs won the scrimmage by a 41-39 score.

The Bucs will be back in action Thursday when they have their home opener with North Marion at 4:30 p.m.
