BUCKHANNON — The Year 2020 may have taken the West Virginia Strawberry Festival away from Buckhannon, but it cannot take away the Strawberry Spirit. Throughout Buckhannon, houses and storefronts are decorated, businesses are serving strawberry-themed specials, and the celebration is still alive.
The WV Strawberry Festival Board posted to Facebook last week asking citizens to keep up their spirits by offering House Decorating and Best Strawberry Yard contests. They asked residents to submit past parade photos to reminisce after the parades were cancelled. One Main Street business even painted a strawberry wearing a pandemic face mask on their window, while others adorned homemade masks covered in colorful strawberries.
Many different restaurants around town are still offering specials, despite the festival being canceled. Sweet-A-Licious has tons of delicious treats available like chocolate covered strawberries and strawberry shortcakes, strawberry crepes and Bonnie Belle’s strawberry shortcake cupcakes. This past week, Stone Tower Brews offered items like strawberry salads and strawberry habanero pulled pork bbq. This weekend, they are serving chocolate covered strawberry waffles and strawberry shortcake latte.
The 88 Restaurant has their pavilion open with socially distanced dining available on the lawn and they are also offering their fancy chocolate covered strawberries. The Whistle Stop is serving food such as their amazing Berry Bacon BBQ Burger, strawberry cheesecake bites and deep fried oreos, as well as their annual onion petals.
The Social will be hosting outside dining at their alley party for ‘Social Strawberry Saturday’. They will have tables set up outside, but at socially safe distances. The Social will be offering fair food such as corn dogs, philly hoagies, bacon cheddar fries and their special strawberry grilled cheese sandwiches from noon to 6 p.m.
Even though these past couple weeks would have been celebrated differently any other year, Buckhannon still shines with Strawberry Spirit. Get out to join in the fun this weekend and support your favorite local business!
