Buckhannon Post 7’s four-game winning streak ends with a 10-0 setback to Elkins Post 29

Nick Calef-Boring (15) of Buckhannon Post 7 slides into second base on a fielder’s choice in the first inning of their American Legion Area V clash with Elkins Tuesday evening at Robin Harvey Memorial Field. Post 7 dropped a 10-0 decision in five innings, ending their four-game winning streak.

ELKINS – Buckhannon Post 7 saw their four-game winning streak come to a screeching halt against Elkins Post 29 Tuesday at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Post 7 was one-hit by Elkins’ Matthew Gainer and dropped a 10-0 five-inning contest in an Area V game.

The loss left Post 7 with a 7-8 record overall and a 4-2 Area V mark.

“Gainer is a talented pitcher, a two-time conference pitcher of the year in high school,” noted Buckhannon Post 7 general manager Kevin Boring. “But we made it easy on him taking a lot of first-pitch strikes. We put ourselves in early holes at the plate and then we were stuck behind in the count trying to hit his curve or breaking ball.”

Elkins jumped on Buckhannon early, never letting them into the game with a five-run first inning.

They tacked on three more in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the third for their 10-0 lead.

Buckhannon’s best scoring chance came in the top of the fourth when Alek Seech led off the inning with a triple, but was left stranded there.

Seech’s triple was the only hit of the game for Post 7.

Nick Calef-Boring was hit by a pitch in the first and Trey Leigh, who drew a walk in the fourth, were the only other Post 7 base runners.

Wesley Rosencrance started the game for Post 7 and suffered the loss.

He went just 1/3 of an inning and gave up five runs on three hits.

Casey Hamner pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief and allowed four earned runs on eight hits while fanning one.

Taylor Whitehair pitched a scoreless fourth inning for Post 7.

Elkins collected 12 hits, five of which that went for extra bases.

Gage Bibey led the Elkins offense with three hits while Nathan Cooper, Read Schumacher, Gainer and Cory Reed each had two apiece.

Gainer tossed all five innings and gave up just the one hit while walking one and striking out eight.

Buckhannon will now enter their Fourth of July break and will return to action Monday at Bridgeport at 7 p.m.

They will host Preston on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
