Buckhannon Post 7 tumbles to loaded South Charleston, 11-1

ST. ALBANS – Buckhannon Post 7 ventured to the Kanawha Valley to take on one of the best squads in the state on Friday when they played South Charleston Post 94 at St. Albans High School.

While Post 7 stayed with South Charleston for seven innings, they ultimately dropped an 11-1 decision in eight innings as the game was called on the mercy rule.

Post 7 took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and maintained that lead until the bottom of the third inning.

With two outs in the top of the first, Brayden Hamer and Isaac Lane hit back-to-back singles and Landon Marple brought home Hamer with a single to center field.

It was the only run of the game for Post 7.

South Charleston finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of third inning on a two-run double by Broedy Boyce and one-run singles from Trent Short and Isaac McCallister making it a 4-1 game.

South Charleston tacked on two more in the bottom of the fourth on a one-run single from Peyton Stover and Stover later scored on a Buckhannon error making it a 6-1 contest.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth inning when South Charleston scored five runs to end the game.

“Honestly, I thought this was one of our better efforts this season,” remarked Buckhannon Post 7 manager Kevin Boring. “We had a lot of energy from the start and took an early lead and held it for three innings. We were  in the game for a long time. We held them scoreless in five of the eight innings which was a huge achievement as they have three Class AAA First Team All-Staters on their team.”

The loss dropped Buckhannon to 1-5 on the season.

“I think we are improving as a group each time out,” concluded Boring. “We’ve played some very strong teams to start the season. You have to play tough teams to get better. I am excited to see the progress as we have a stretch of 13 games in 11 days.”

They will return to action today hosting Braxton County Post 33 at 7 p.m. and will remain at home Wednesday hosting Kingwood Post 56 at 7 p.m.
