Buckhannon Post 7 set to co-host Hillbilly Hardball Classic this week

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon Post 7 Legion baseball team will once again be a co-host for the Pizza Hut Hillbilly Hardball Classic that will take place this Thursday to Sunday.

The Classic is in its 28th year and Buckhannon has been a tournament location for over two decades now at William E. Phillips Memorial Field on the campus of Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

“I think our facilities are a huge reason we continue to host games,” remarked Buckhannon Post 7 manager Kevin Boring. “Other teams come in and comment about how nice our field is. Plus it is nice to be able to co-host the event which eliminates us having to travel.”

This year’s tournament will feature 31 teams from six states including Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The Classic will be held at seven locations including William E. Phillips Memorial Field. Robin Harvey Memorial Field and Elkins High School will serve as the host sites along with fields at Tygarts Valley High School, Philip Barbour High School, Robert C. Byrd High School and Bridgeport High School.

Buckhannon Post 7 was placed in the Black Division along with Clarksburg Post 13, Fairmont Appalachian A’s, Florida Gulf Coast 18U, Latrobe (Pa.) Post 515 and South Charleston Post 94.

Post 7 will start their tournament action Thursday when they host Florida Gulf Coast 18U at 1 p.m.

On Friday, they will entertain Latrobe Post 151 at noon and then play Fairmont Appalachian A’s at 5 p.m.

Saturday’s action will see them play Clarksburg Post 13 at 1:30 p.m. and South Charleston at 6:30 p.m.

“I think the Hillbilly Hardball Tournament is an awesome event,” remarked Boring. “I equate it to the Mingo Bay Classic in South Carolina for the high school baseball team. You get to see teams from outside of your area. We certainly will have several challenges on our hands this week and weekend. We open with a very good Florida team and Latrobe is very good. South Charleston is always one of the state’s best teams and Fairmont and Clarksburg are very capable. It’s a tough five games.”

Semi-final action and the championship game are scheduled for Sunday.
