Buckhannon Post 7 loses on walk-off to Kingwood in Legion baseball, 5-4

Buckhannon Post 7’s Casey Hamner, shown here a previous game, hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for Post 7 but they team dropped a 5-4 decision to Kingwood Post 56 Monday evening in Kingwood.

KINGWOOD – Buckhannon suffered their second walk-off defeat in the last eight days as this time it was Kingwood Post 56 doing the honors as they downed Post 7 by a 5-4 score.

With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh with one out and the bases loaded, Kingwood’s Andrew Kerzak reached on an error on a potential double play ball that allowed Jacob Spearen to score from third base for the win.

Buckhannon left 11 runners stranded and committed four errors which led to just two of Kingwood’s five runs being earned.

“It was a game that we let get away from us that we should have won,” noted Buckhannon Post 7 general manager Kevin Boring.

The loss ended Buckhannon’s two-game winning streak and put their record at 9-11.

Kingwood took an early 2-0 lead against Buckhannon in the bottom of the first.

Corey Pyles started the inning with a triple and scored on an error and Tucker Livengood later doubled and brought home Austin Forbes.

Kingwood made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the second when Forbes hit a one-run single bringing home Ethan Haskiell.

Buckhannon took their first lead with a four-run fifth inning as they did all their damage with two outs.

Alek Seech drew a two-out walk and Nick Calef-Boring kept the inning going with a single.

Trey Leigh stepped to the plate and brought home both runners with a single.

Casey Hamner followed with a two-run home run that scored Leigh and gave Post 7 a 4-3 lead.

Kingwood deadlocked the game in the bottom of the sixth at 4-4 when Byron Brandt scored on a single by Pyles.

In the bottom of the seventh for Kingwood, Spearen hit a one-out single, Garrett Williams followed with a single and Ethan Haskiell was intentionally walked to have a force play at any base before Kerzak reached on the error.

Buckhannon outhit Kingwood by a 9-7 margin.

Hamner and Taylor Whitehair each had two hits for Post 7.

Logan Bailey started the game and went four innings allowing just one earned run on three hits while fanning one.

Wesley Rosencrance (0-5) suffered the loss in a relief role.

He pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up an earned run on four hits while striking out two.

Pyles had two of Kingwood’s seven hits.

Spearen recorded the win for Kingwood tossing two innings of scoreless relief.

Buckhannon was slated to play Weston Post 4 Thursday evening after the game was rained out on Wednesday.

They will close out their regular season tonight when they host Garrett Post 77/214 at 7 p.m.

The Area V Tournament will begin Wednesday in Elkins where Post 7 will play Weston Post 4 in the opening contest of the four-team, double-elimination tournament in a two seed vs. three seed game.
