ELKINS – The Buckhannon Post 7 Legionaries will look to end a 13-year drought in the West Virginia American Legion State Tournament as play begins in the Area V double-elimination tournament today at Robin Harvey Memorial Field in Elkins.
Elkins Post 29 will host the tournament after winning the Area V regular-season title with a 7-1 Area mark
They own a 23-15 record overall.
Buckhannon finished second with a 6-2 Area V mark (10-12 overall) while Weston Post 4 was third (3-5 Area V, 7-11 overall), Braxton County Post 33 finished fourth (3-5 Area V and 5-10 overall) and Summersville Post 131 claimed fifth (1-7 Area V and 6-18 overall).
Buckhannon will kick-off the tournament as they will battle Weston at 5 p.m. while Elkins Post 29 will face Summersville today at 7:30 p.m. in the other first-round game.
Braxton County elected not to participate in the tournament due to a player shortage.
Buckhannon swept the season series from Weston, taking game one at home by a 7-5 score and then winning a 16-5 contest in Weston.
Post 7 also swept Summersville while splitting their series with Elkins and Braxton.
“In order for Post 7 to advance to the state tournament, we have to win this Area V Tournament and it will be a tough task,” remarked Buckhannon Post 7 general manager Kevin Boring. “We have beaten all the teams in the regular season that we could potentially face - Elkins, Weston and Summersville. However, several of those have been very close games during the regular season.”
It will be an uphill battle for Post 7 as they will be missing three starters and up to five overall players for the tournament due to other commitments.
“That will create an uphill battle from the start for our team,” acknowledged Boring. “We will need our younger guys to step up this week. I expect us to battle to the end with a "next man up" mentality. Our mindset going in is to take it pitch by pitch/situation by situation. We need to work the opposing pitchers, need to limit our own defensive errors and pitcher walks. We need to be aggressive at the plate and look to drive balls that are in our hot zones.”
Thursday’s action will have the first elimination game at 5 p.m. and the winner’s bracket game at 7:30 p.m. while Friday will have the second elimination game at 5 p.m. and the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
If a second game is needed to determine the Area V champion, it will be held Saturday at 2 p.m.
The State Tournament is scheduled for July 31-Aug. 3 at Potomac State College in Keyser.
The five area champions along with host Berkeley County Post 14 will advance to the state tournament.
