Buckhannon police arrest shoplifter

BUCKHANNON – A Barbour County man has been arrested for allegedly shoplifting from Walmart.

On Jan. 18, Patrolman Samuel Criss responded to a shoplifting in progress at Walmart with Patrolman Tanner Collins. Scottie Vanover, 35, was stopped outside by loss prevention and Collins, according to the criminal complaint in the Upshur County Magistrate Clerk’s office.

When asked if he had stolen anything, Vanover told officers that he took a speaker which was in his pocket. However, a search of Vanover revealed multiple items in his backpack and on his person, totaling $636.18. Vanover has two prior shoplifting convictions, one in Kentucky in June 2011 and one in Preston County in December 2017, making this a shoplifting third or subsequent offense, a felony.

Magistrate Mike Coffman set bond at $10,000. If convicted, Vanover faces a $500 to $5,000 fine and imprisonment of one to 10 years. At least one year shall be spent confinement and is not subject to probation.
