BUCKHANNON — The Miss West Virginia USA and Miss West Virginia Teen USA competitions have come to Buckhannon this weekend to crown this year’s winners, who will later compete in hopes of becoming Miss USA and Miss Teen USA.
Hosted at the Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College, the pageants will take place July 9-11. Each contestant will take part in three phases of competition—Personal Interview, Swimsuit for Miss and Active Wear for Teen, and Evening Gown.
Buckhannon’s very own City Recorder Randy Sanders organized the “Journey to the Crown” as the long-time State Pageant Director of the Miss West Virginia USA and Miss West Virginia Teen USA competitions. “Each year, we see that pageant contestants undergo a life-changing experience—one filled with great memories, strong friendships, and a defining sense of accomplishment,” Sanders shared. “Through their commitment to creating an enriching experience for themselves and each other, the contestants in the 2021 Miss West Virginia USA and Teen USA pageants represent the best that the state has to offer and help West Virginia shine.”
Sanders isn’t the only Buckhannon native taking part in this weekend’s excitement—Teen contestants Cadence Ringer and NinaMae Coberly will be competing for the ultimate crown in their hometown!
Cadence Ringer, an upcoming senior at Buckhannon-Upshur High School, expressed her excitement for the competition. “This year, since the pageant is held in Buckhannon, it is extra special to be representing Upshur County! I am excited to introduce the attendees of the pageant to this beautiful county! Along with this, I am also thrilled to be able to spread awareness about the struggle of foster children in West Virginia! I have partnered with Bryanna Williams, a Buckhannon native, with her program “Sprinkled with Hope”! She has created a program that allows children in the foster care system to receive a birthday present, which they often don’t get,” Ringer explained.
Nina Mae Coberly, a 15-year-old sophomore at B-UHS, is also eager to compete in Buckhannon. “I am so happy to be competing in my hometown,” Coberly expressed. “I entered the pageant because it has been a dream of mine to hold a USA title since I was a little girl. My current pageant director recommended that I compete, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity! I hope to gain more self-confidence and meet several new people while reaching for my dream.”
The 2021 West Virginia Strawberry Festival Queen Caylie Simmons has the honor of representing Buckhannon in multiple ways during this year’s competition. Simmons expressed, “It’s a true honor to represent the WV Strawberry Festival and the City of Buckhannon. I hope to represent with poise and make Buckhannon so proud! I am most excited for interview; this is part of the competition that allows me to communicate with the judges about interests/causes I’m most passionate about and let’s them get to know me.”
These young women and 25 other contestants will compete for the crown and coveted title of 2021 Miss West Virginia USA and Miss West Virginia Teen USA, along with extensive prize packages from Buckhannon sponsors and beyond! Some of the many prizes include a $2,500 per year scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan College ($10,000 total over four years); floral bouquets presented by Feola’s Flowers and Anita’s Flower Shop of Buckhannon; a 4-Day all-expense paid retreat to a fabulous resort and spa in Cancun, Mexico; Fiestas WVA, a Taco Bell franchisee and proud owner of Taco Bell Buckhannon, will provide Miss West Virginia USA a $3,000 wardrobe allowance and Miss West Virginia Teen USA a $2,000 wardrobe allowance; Caroline & Co.
