Buccaneers fall to University for sectional crown, visit Morgantown Wednesday in regional co-final

MORGANTOWN – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers have to feel that they gave the game away to University last Thursday with the Region I, Section 2 crown on the line.

The Bucs owned a 46-44 lead over the Hawks entering the fourth quarter, but the Hawks flew past the Bucs in the final quarter outscoring them by a 21-7 margin for a 65-53 win and the sectional title.

The game was eerily similar to their regular-season game on March 30.

In that game the Bucs led by four going into the fourth quarter and let it slip away with a 58-55 defeat.

The Bucs trailed early by a 15-4 score but ended the first quarter on a 10-4 run to be down by only five, at 19-14.

Ryan Hurst scored at the first-half buzzer on a putback to tie the contest at the intermission at 28-28.

Harrison Walker uncorked a three-pointer to put the Bucs ahead, at 31-30 and they kept that lead at 46-44 going into the final quarter.

Down 46-44 to start the fourth, University went on a 6-0 run after getting a lay-up from Ryan Niceler and inside baskets from T. T. Brooks for a 50-46 lead.

The Hawks extended their lead going five-of-six from the line to 55-47.

Ryan Hurst drained a three-pointer for the Bucs, one of three on the night, to pull B-U to within five, with 3:35 left to play.

That was as close as the Bucs could get as Niceler turned in an old-fashioned three-pointer and scored on a lay-up to put the Bucs down by 10, at 60-50, with 2:28 remaining.

University ended the game outscoring the Bucs by a 5-3 score.

Ryan Hurst and Walker led the Bucs with 13 points each while Lamar Hurst added 11 and Zach White 10.

Aaron Forbes led University with 17 points while Blake Barkley added 15 and Niceler put in 13.

University improved to 10-1 on the season and will host Wheeling Park in a regional co-final game on Wednesday.

The loss dropped the Bucs to 12-7 and they will travel to Morgantown Wednesday to face the Mohigans in the other Region I co-final game.

The game will tip at 7 p.m.
