BUCKHANNON — She’s hoping to attract new, local shoppers to her store, but the owner of Marian’s Unique Boutique on Main Street is a pretty savvy shopper herself.
Marian Jarrell, who moved into the storefront at 7 E. Main Street where the former Whimsical Treasures was located, says she has to be because that’s what sets her store apart.
Jarrell opened the specialty boutique in early January and sells an eclectic mixture of unique clothing — “clothing that you will not find in a mall,” she says — which she describes as “casual, trendy, resort-type clothing.” Clothing is her primary line of items, but she also carries specialty lines of jewelry, purses, gifts, home décor items, local artwork, books and greeting cards. Jarrell can’t talk about purses without mentioning a new line she’s expected to begin selling soon — Spartina.
“It’s very selective — you have to be selected to sell them,” Jarrell said, beaming. “Not just anybody can sell them. I think it’s just going to take my boutique to a new level.”
Jarrell relocated her shop in Buckhannon after being open in Weston for two years when the space Whimsical Treasures was formerly located in became open.
“This is a nicer, much bigger area with better lighting,” Jarrell said. “There are a lot of benefits here. I like the fact that this is a very vibrant community with a lot of community pride and a sense of camaraderie or friendship among the people. It provides a really great business opportunity, being in the heart of everything on Main Street, so when I found out this place was for rent, I jumped on it. I felt like Buckhannon would give me a lot better business climate.”
Jarrell was first attracted to the town when she participated in Create Buckhannon’s Festival Fridays during the summer season, bringing Simply Delicious Desserts to Jawbone Park for sale.
“I felt very accepted and welcomed,” she said of the summer event designed to draw people out to socialize with old friends.
Jarrell, who boasts a background in direct sales, says she wants people to consider her shop “a place you can buy a beautiful, unique gift” — hence, the name Marian’s Unique Boutique. She also prides herself on offering excellent one-on-one customer service.
“I think my shop brings a very friendly approach to welcoming locals as well as people from out of town,” Jarrell said. “I try to portray that person that totally embraces every customer that walks through the door, and I take a lot of pride in how I gift bag my items.”
Jarrell wants the community to know that she’s also a Young Living essential oils dealer and teaches classes on a regular basis to educate people about their health benefits. They can serve as an alternative to medications and provide stellar aromatherapy, Jarrell says.
“They bring a lot of therapeutic results,” Jarrell said. “They are alternate remedies to a lot of physical problems.”
Jarrell is inviting those who have yet to tour her store to stop by.
“I just would like for people to know that I’ve worked very hard to bring a very nice, unique mixture of gifts, jewelry and clothing,” she said. “I’ve had very good feedback from customers who have walked through. I only hope to meet more customers and grow my business.”
