BOE recognizes Fall 2021 Buccaneers of the Month


BUCKHANNON — During the Upshur County Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, teachers and coaches from Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School and Buckhannon-Upshur High School attended to recognize their students for academic and athletic achievements with Upshur Star Awards.

B-UMS Principal Samantha Leput awarded “Buccaneers of the Month” for September, October and November.

The September Buccaneers of the Month were announced as follows:

8th grade

From the Swaggy Bucs Team – Bella Mullens and Ethan Watkins

From the Blacksmith Mountaineers Team – Sophia Kelley and Brandon Kittle

7th grade

From the Wild West Virginia Team – Sceneca Warner and Mikey Miller

From the Pirates Team – Madilynne Bouscher and Brody Jeran

6th grade

From the Sixth Squad – Leigha Manspeaker and Aiden Snyder

From the Dynamite Squad – Lena Rose Walker and Sawyer Phillips

The October Buccaneers of the Month were announced as follows:

8th grade

From the Swaggy Bucs Team – Mackenzie Spencer and Julian Smith

From the Blacksmith Mountaineers Team – Deiara Russell and Jerin Westfall

7th grade

From the Wild West Virginia Team – Anya Morehead and Abigael Harris

From the Pirates Team – Alivia Cogar and Deacon Thorn

6th grade

Kristine Frye, Caitlyn Davis, and Owen Cartwright

The November Buccaneers of the Month were announced as follows:

8th grade

From the Swaggy Bucs Team – Ariel Blackburn and Loyd McWhorter

From the Blacksmith Mountaineers Team – Colton Tenney and Mia Bozic

7th grade

From the Wild West Virginia Team – Jacklin Smith and Carter Meeks

From the Pirates Team – Johnny Chenn and Sophia Fox

6th grade

From the Sixth Squad – Madison Knabenshue and Levi Ringer

From the Dynamite Squad – Marabeth Hines and Koby Jeran

In addition to academic awards, coaches recognized the following teams, and each player in attendance received an Upshur Stars Award:  B-UHS Cheer, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Girls’ Soccer and Boys’ Soccer; and B-UMS Cheer, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Girls’ Soccer and Boys’ Soccer.

Students were commended, for both academics and athletics, as the past seasons have been a challenge due to the balance of their regular work in addition to COVID-19 restrictions. These students have shown outstanding work in their classrooms, and on their playing fields.
