BOE general meeting hosted at B-UMS


BUCKHANNON — On Tuesday, Upshur County’s Board of Education met at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School (B-UMS) to discuss reports from each department.

Kacey Wooten and Joyce Harris-Thacker presented B-UMS’s Faculty Senate report via a video presentation. The video showcased students and staff members, highlighting the great things taking place at the middle school, including project-based learning, community involvement, fundraising, field trips, school dances, pep-rallies and program proposals.

Beginning department reports, Jeff Perkins briefly highlighted the board’s revenues, expenditures, bill payments and budget statuses.

Tim Derico reported on behalf of the Maintenance Department, which is working diligently to clear work orders, and complete projects/renovations in Upshur County Schools. They are in the process of correcting various power issues, as well as maintaining snow removal.

Following, Kayla Yocum and Quinten Oldaker provided the Technology Department report, announcing an upcoming training for secretaries and cooks to learn how to operate Microsoft Office technology products on February 3. The re-scheduled date for the teacher’s Apple Training Workshop is to be determined.

In the Curriculum and Instruction update, Ms. Stewart and Mrs. Johnson announced there are currently 395 “virtual learning” students in the school system.

Concluding department reports, Matthew Sisk reviewed numbers in the Safety & Emergency Preparedness department, showing, as of January 24, there are 46 total positive COVID-19 cases and 55 active quarantines.

The board approved the following personnel changes:

Resignation of: Crystal Howell as Special Education Tutor for Upshur County Schools (UCS); Amanda Craig as Principal of Rock Cave Elementary School; Matthew Westfall as Substitute Custodian for UCS; Sarah Critchfield and Jordon Barr as Tutors for Buckhannon Academy Elementary School; Connie Brady as Substitute Secretary for UCS; and Sherry Dean as Substitute for UCS.

Employment of: Brandon Tenney as PALS Teacher for Buckhannon-Upshur High School; Daniel Gregory as Bus Operator for UCS; Dan Duke, Cyrus Thompson, and Dirk Hyre as Substitute Custodians for UCS; and Rosemary Cutright as Substitute Aide for UCS.

The next BOE meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.
