Bobcats’ season ends with loss to Charleston

BECKLEY – The 2017 baseball season came to a disappointing end for West Virginia Wesleyan’s Bobcats here Sunday morning when they dropped an 18-2 decision to Charleston’s Golden Eagles in the Mountain East Conference Tournament loser’s bracket finals.
Charleston went on to face Shepherd’s Rams Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles downed Shepherd by a 13-11 score to force the “if” game, but the Rams came back to claim a 13-5 verdict in the finale to repeat as tourney champions.
Wesleyan managed just four hits, with Greg Smith and Eric Forbrick belting doubles, and Travis Renner and Ryan Kiser lashing singles. Charleston pounded out 21, including four doubles, a triple and three home runs.
The Golden Eagle took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, erupted for seven in the fourth and ran the count to 13-0 with three in the top of the fifth.
The Bobcats picked up their first run in the bottom of the fifth when Kiser drew a lead-off walk, advanced on a walk to Forbrick, and sprinted home on Renner’s single up the middle.
Charleston plated two more in the seventh and tacked on one in the top of the eighth to up the spread to 16-1.
The ‘Cats got their other marker in the tailend of the eighth, with Nick Bader walking with one out, going to third on Smith’s double to left field, and crossing on James Fraser’s ground-out to short.
Steven Davis led Shepherd’s hit parade with four raps, with Colby Johnson, Lee Carneal, Nick Wilson and Brice Arrington collecting three apiece and Taylor Itnyre adding two.
Davis blasted two homers and a double to drive in six runs, while Corneal had a triple and home run and six runs-batted-in.
The ‘Cats closed out the year with an overall record of 23-30.
