Bobcats recognize 2022-2023 senior players

Team captains take the field for the stating coin flip.

BUCKHANNON — The West Virginia Wesleyan College Bobcats Football team honored their class of 2022 seniors this past Saturday, November 5, before the start of their last home game of the season against Frostburg State.

The seniors recognized included Dequandre Edwards, Jalen Fant, Brandon Fitzgerald, Jake Folland, Kobe Hill, Evin Hurt, Deontre Logan, Rennard Matthews, Justin McIntyre, Trey Milam, David Robertson, Caden Rohrbough, Khalil Smith and C.J. Washington.

Although falling to the Bobcats of Frostburg State 37-0, the West Virginia Wesleyan College Bobcats performed well on the defensive side of the ball especially in the first half.

Only allowing 17 points in the first half, the Wesleyan Bobcats had two first half interceptions to halt the Frostburg’s offensive deep into Wesleyan’s territory. Ely Ghameshlougy, a freshman defensive back, intercepted the Frostburg quarterback’s pass in Wesleyan’s own endzone, resulting in a touchback, giving the Wesleyan Bobcats offense the ball at their own 20-yard line. Derrik Smith, sophomore defensive back, intercepted the Frostburg quarterbacks for his second interception of the game. Smith made the interception at the Wesleyan’s two-yard line, putting a stop to the Frostburg offensive attack deep into Wesleyan territory.

In the second half of play, the WVWC defense continued to play well, trying to keep the Bobcats in the game. The Wesleyan Bobcat defense only allowed 13 points in the second half of the game. The Frostburg State Bobcats scored a total of 20 points in the second half, but seven of those points came on a pick-six touchdown return from the Frostburg defense. Senior defensive back, Justin McIntyre made the third interception of the night for the Wesleyan defense.

For the Wesleyan offense, Nathan Payne completed 16 of 33 passes for 185 yards. Senior running back, Khalil Smith, led the way for the Wesleyan running game with 20 yards on 7 attempts and sophomore running back Javian Tomlinson added 11 more yards on 5 attempts.

Wesleyan will finish their 2022 season on the road against Glenville State University. The Bobcats will face-off against the Pioneers on Saturday, November 12. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. The Bobcats look to get their second win on the year and finish their 2022 season on a good note.
