Bobcats drop home doubleheader to Notre Dame, 13-6 and 6-4

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team dropped a home doubleheader to the Notre Dame Falcons Saturday at Hank Ellis Field in Mountain East Conference action.

The Bobcats lost a 13-6 decision in game one and dropped the second outing by a 6-4 score.

The pair of losses kept the Bobcats of head coach Randy Tenney winless on the season at 0-6.

An 11-run third inning by Notre Dame did in the Bobcats in game one.

They trailed 12-0 before chasing across four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Andrew Walker scored on the first run on a wild pitch, Eric Forbrick hit a two-run double, and Adrian Delgado hit a one-run single.

Bryson Fluke hit into a double play that scored Walker in the bottom of the sixth inning making it a 12-5 contest.

A sacrifice fly by Jacob Fonderlin gave Notre Dame a 13-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning.

Delgado hit a solo home run to left field for Wesleyan in the bottom of the seventh to wrap up the scoring.

Wesleyan was outhit by a 15-8 margin in the contest.

Michael Zeuli had four hits for Notre Dame while Ben Ross, Nick Farrell and Fonderlin each had three.

Delgado had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Wesleyan offense.

Mitchell Courtney (0-2) suffered the loss for Wesleyan.

He started the game and went two innings and gave up five earned runs on seven hits.

Game two saw Wesleyan take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a one-run single by Sam Ross that scored Sam Ingram.

Notre Dame scored a trio of runs in the top of the third and added one more in the top of the fourth for a 4-1 lead.

Wesleyan answered with a two-run double from Cade Leach in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 4-3 game and they tied it in the bottom of the sixth when Nick Grotti singled home Fluke.

Wesleyan couldn’t keep Notre Dame off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh as Parker Hray and Zeuli each knocked in one-run singles to give the Falcons a 6-4 lead.

Ingram led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk but was left stranded at second base when Tanner McCallister flied out to left field for the final out.

Both teams had eight hits in the contest.

Ross and Hray both had two for Notre Dame while Grotti collected three for Wesleyan.

Jake Mauzy (0-1) pitched 2/3 of an inning and suffered the loss for Wesleyan allowing one earned run on two hits.

Notre Dame improved to 8-10 on the season.

Wesleyan was scheduled to play Alderson-Broaddus Monday in a doubleheader.

They will return to the diamond visiting Charleston Saturday and Sunday for a pair of MEC doubleheaders.

They will start at 1 p.m. on both days.
