MURFREESBORO, N.C. — West Virginia Wesleyan claimed four of the six singles but could not complete a comeback win over host Chowan University here Saturday afternoon, falling 5-4 in their season opener.
The Hawks jumped on top by sweeping the doubles matches for a commanding 3-0 lead before Wesleyan grinned back to close the gap in the singles matches.

After Alexander Lyudinovskiy grabbed a 6-2, 7-5 decision at No. 6 singles to get the ‘Cats within reach, Chowan closed out the match with a 6-1 6-4 win at No. 5 singles.
Yonas Gebre finished the scoring with a three-set win at No. 4 to provide the final margin.
The Bobcats were set to travel to the University of Mount Olive on Sunday to take on the Trojans (4-2) on their campus courts. It will be the second match ever between the schools. UMO won the only other meeting 8-1 in 2013.
Wesleyan’s home opener is scheduled for Saturday against Roberts Wesleyan.
