Bobcat tennis team drops 5-4 decision to Chowan in opener


MURFREESBORO, N.C. ­— West Virginia Wesleyan claimed four of the six singles but could not complete a comeback win over host Chowan University here Saturday afternoon, falling 5-4 in their season opener.

The Hawks jumped on top by sweeping the doubles matches for a commanding 3-0 lead before Wesleyan grinned back to close the gap in the singles matches.

Ramon Rodriguez (No. 3) and Maycon Santos Dias (No. 1) won their respective matches to cut into the lead.

After Alexander Lyudinovskiy grabbed a 6-2, 7-5 decision at No. 6 singles to get the ‘Cats within reach, Chowan closed out the match with a 6-1 6-4 win at No. 5 singles.

Yonas Gebre finished the scoring with a three-set win at No. 4 to provide the final margin.

The Bobcats were set to travel to the University of Mount Olive on Sunday to take on the Trojans (4-2) on their campus courts. It will be the second match ever between the schools. UMO won the only other meeting 8-1 in 2013.

Wesleyan’s home opener is scheduled for Saturday against  Roberts Wesleyan.
