Bobcat rally comes up short in seventh inning against UVa.-Wise


WISE (Va.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats dropped a road doubleheader to the UVa.-Wise Cavaliers Saturday at Stallard Field in Mountain East Conference action.

A seventh-inning rally came up just short in game with a 4-3 setback and the ‘Cats dropped a 13-5 decision in the second game.

Wesleyan has now lost 13 of their last 15 contests.

The pair of losses left the Bobcats of head coach Randy Tenney with a 16-28 record overall and a 9-17 conference mark.

In game one, a pair of one-run doubles by Tyler Blaum and David Thomas staked the hosts to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

A ground out RBI by Bret Roberts pushed the UVa.-Wise lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second.

Wesleyan dented the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when Dominic Castello hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Antonio Vega.

A solo home run by Dawson Cagle upped the Cavaliers’ lead to three, at 4-1.

Wesleyan rallied in the top of the seventh with two runs when Eric Forbrick doubled home Greg Smith and Vega singled home Forbrick, but Wesleyan couldn’t manage to get that tying run across leaving a runner stranded at first.

Both teams had seven hits in the contest.

Smith led the Bobcats with two while Brett Yates had two for UVa.-Wise.

Hunter Rotarius (1-7) suffered the loss going the distance.

He gave up four earned runs on seven hits while striking out five.

Greg Duncan earned the win for UVa.-Wise going 5 1/3 innings and not allowing an earned run on three hits.

Nate Thompson earned the save recording the final out of the game.

In game two, UVa-Wise scored a pair in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead before Wesleyan answered with a run in the top of the second on a one-run single by Nick Grotti.

UVa.-Wise added three more in the bottom of the second for a 5-1 advantage.

A two-run home run by Forbrick made it a 5-3 game in the top of the third and a sacrifice fly by Grotti in the top of the fifth closed the gap to 5-4 for Wesleyan.

UVa.-Wise put the game out of reach with a five-run fifth inning and a three-run sixth inning for a 13-4 lead.

Forbrick hit his second home run of the game in the top of the seventh to wrap up the scoring.

Forbrick had a team-high three hits while Smith collected two of Wesleyan’s eight hits.

Tristan Peccerllie had three of UVa.-Wise’s 13 hits.

Griffin Roe (2-7) started the game for Wesleyan and suffered the loss going 4 1/3 innings.

He gave up eight earned runs on eight hits.

Landon Faulkner (3-6) picked up the win for UVa.-Wise lasting five innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits.

The ‘Cats and Cavaliers were slated to play another doubleheader Sunday.

Wesleyan will be back in action Friday when they visit Glenville State for a league doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
