GLENVILLE — The West Virginia Wesleyan men’s basketball team dropped an 88-83 overtime decision to California (Pa.) in their season opener Saturday in the Glenville State Tip-Off Classic.
With only 4:37 remaining in regulation, the Vulcans held an eight-point lead, at 60-52. But Coach Jack Meriwether’s Bobcats rallied to force overtime. The score stood at 67-67 after regulation.
In the overtime, Cal opened up an eight-point lead, at 83-75, and never looked back in taking the five-point win at game’s end.
Four different Bobcats scored in double figures. Kevin Kangni posted team highs with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
He was complemented by Luca Petrovic with 15 points, Fred Bronsted with 12 and Aaron Ariri with 11. Petrovic posted a game-high seven assists.
California’s duo of Isaiah Lewis (29 points) and Terry Davis Jr. (25 points) accounted for 54 of the 88 Vulcan points.
Wesleyan was scheduled to face Slippery Rock on Sunday afternoon to complete play in the Classic. The Bobcats will then open the home portion of the schedule at 4 p.m. Saturday against MEC preseason favorite Wheeling Jesuit.
