WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – West Virginia Wesleyan’s Bobcats got their Spring Break schedule off to a rough 0-3 start here over the weekend, dropping a 9-7 decision to the Davenport (Mich.) Panthers Saturday, and falling to the Findlay (Ohio) Oilers in a twin bill Sunday, 11-5 and 9-6.

In the opener, Davenport jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a pair of errors, Nolan Bryant’s double, and sacrifice flies by Austin Petravicius and Brian Sobieski.

The ‘Cats tied it up in the bottom of the frame. Antonio Vega rapped a one-out single, Eric Forbrick walked, and Wyatt Adkins singled to load the bases. Nick Grotti walked to force Vega home, and Dominic Castello was hit by a pitch to tally Forbrick.

Wesleyan took the lead with two markers in the third stanza on back-to-back triples by Ryan Kiser and Adkins and Castello’s sacrifice fly

The Panthers plated one in the upper half of the fifth, with Zac Wilson banging a single, stealing second and crossing on Anthony DiPonio’s two-bagger.

But the Bobcats answered with one in the home half to maintain their lead when Riley Mets belted a two-out double, moved to third on a bobble and dashed home on Vega’s single.

Davenport erupted for six runs in the sixth, taking advantage of three miscues, a wild pitch and a walk, and getting singles from Jimmy Filipski, Wilson and DiPonio.

The ‘Cats rallied for a pair in the eighth without a hit, using a passed ball on a third strike, two walks and an error.

Wesleyan finished with nine hits, with Adkins and Vega belting three apiece.

Jake Bishop started on the mound and suffered the loss, with Julio Medina, Hunter Rotarius, Sean Cliff and Logan Brouwer throwing in relief.

In Sunday’s first clash, Findlay opened the scoring in the top of the first, plating a solo marker when Casey Gould walked, moved up on an error and raced home on Derrick Herd’s single.

The ‘Cats wasted no time evening the count, with Greg Smith belting  a lead-off homer in the bottom of the first.

The Oilers picked up one in the upper part of the second on a pair of walks,  Josh Schwerer’s sacrifice bunt and Gould’s sacrifice fly, but the Bobcats tied it up again, with Adrian Delgado cracking a one-out single, moving to third on Grotti’s double and crossing on Alex Skinner’s sacrifice fly.

Wesleyan took a 4-2 lead with two in the third stanza on singles by Smith, Vega and Kiser and a wild pitch.

Findlay went on a six-run spree in the top of the fourth to grab an 8-4 advantage, using singles by Ryan O’Malley, Troy Merriman, Nic Varda and Trevor Anderson, Schwerer’s two-bagger and Ethan St. Clair’s grand-slam homer.

The Bobcats got their final tally in the tailend of the fourth, with Grotti and Skinner drawing back-to-back passes and Bryson Fluke smacking a single.

Findlay added three in the sixth.

The ‘Cats belted out 11 hits, with Delgado collecting three and Smith and Vega adding two each.

Starter Griffin Roe took the loss. Ryan Reicoff, Castello and Jake Hakey came on in relief.

The second game saw the ‘Cats blanked the first five frames.

Findlay started the scoring in the first with three markers coming on a walk, an error, a wild pitch, Herd’s single and Varda’s two-run double.

The Oilers exploded for four in the fourth, cashing in on a walk and an error and getting singles from Trevor Anderson and St. Clair and a two-run two-bagger from Gould.

They made it 9-0 with two in the fifth on a walk and Varda’s home run.

Wesleyan came alive in the sixth to chase three markers across, with Skinner singling, Vega walking, Adkins smacking a two-run double and Castelo following with a run-producing single.

The Bobcats plated three more in the seventh before time ran out. Dylan Frye banged a lead-off single and Smith followed with a circuit blast, his second of the day. Vega reached on a miscue, advanced on a wild pitch and sprinted home on an Adkins single.

Smith and Adkins had two safeties apiece to pace Wesleyan’s nine-hit attack.

Metz was charged with the mound defeat, starting and working four innings. Connor Scheitzach and Chris Metrick each hurled a frame of relief.

The ’Cats were to have faced Minnesota-Duluth Monday and Ashland (Ohio) and Minnesota-Duluh Tuesday. They will battle Malone today, Ashland Thursday and Tiffin (Ohio) Friday.
