BUCKHANNON — Billie Robert Gatrell, 83, of Tallmansville, died Sunday, March 5, 2017 at his home. He was born Nov. 26, 1933 in Tallmansville, a son of the late Charles R. and Juanita Tenney Gatrell. On April 12, 1997 he married Mary Alice Kelley Bennett who survives. Also surviving are one stepson, Dale P. Bennett and wife Terri Jo, of Tallmansville; two stepgranddaughters, Heather Wright and husband Mark, of Buckhannon, and Tessa Gaughan and husband Steven, of Sanford, N.C.; one stepgrandson, Ty Bennett and Tameka, of Tallmansville; six stepgreat-grandsons; one sister, Thelma L. Gatrell Westfall, of Wake Forest, N.C.; three half-brothers and three half-sisters all of California; a special half-brother, Warren Gatrell and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Gatrell was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School and also WVWC. Mr. Gatrell was a retired construction worker having built tunnels in New York and California. Also he retired after 26 years as owner of Gatrell’s Grocery Store. He loved watching WVU basketball and Football.
Friends will be received Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Tim Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Tallmansville Baptist Church Cemetery in Tallmansville. The Upshur County Honor Guard will provide military honors at the graveside.
