Bennett, Vincent lead B-UHS swim teams to strong showing in holiday quad meet

BUCKHANNON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School swim teams posted a strong performance in their home quad meet over the holidays. Back on December 21, both the boy’s and girl’s swim teams notched several wins and strong finishes to end 2021 on a high note. During the meet, junior Cadence Vincent shattered Maggie Miller’s record time of 5:31.16 in the 500-yard freestyle by posting a blazing fast time of 5:13.61 and junior swimming standout Preston Bennett racked up two team victories and a first and second place finish as an individual to lead the way for head coach Mike Roessing’s teams.

The B-UHS girl’s 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of Cadence Vincent, junior Alayna Whitehair, senior Cameron Zuliani and freshman Riley Vincent, cruised to claim first-place with a final time of 1:58.77, beating out the second-place team’s time of 2:22.03 by over 23 seconds

The B-UHS boy’s 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of Bennett, freshman Carter Zuliani, junior Reis Leonard and junior Owen Caynor, also placed first with a final time of 1:53.79, just narrowly edging out the second-place time of 1:53.92 by a few tenths of a second.

Sophomore Lillian Fetty took second in the girl’s 200-yard freestyles with a final time of 2:35.27. Freshman Samantha Shay wasn’t far behind, finishing the event with a final time of 2:40.04.

Carter Zuliani won the boy’s 200-yard free with a final time of 2:11.79, comfortably in front of the second-place time of 2:31.42. Senior Rhett Ammons took third in the event with a time of 2:34.79, while sophomore Jackson Malone came in sixth with a time of 2:44.80.

Cameron Zuliani won the girl’s 50-yard free, edging out teammate Riley Vincent with a final time of 26.21. The younger Vincent finished just over two seconds behind Zuliani, registering a final time of 28.22. Freshman Cate O’Neill came in seventh with a time of 34.78, just ahead of fellow Lady Buc, freshman Elly Jeran, who finished eighth with a time of 35.30. 

Carter Zuliani also won the boy’s 50-yard free, finishing the race with a time of 24.07. both Owen Caynor and senior Dmetri Ormeno joined Zuliani on the podium, earning second and third finishes, with final times of 26.29 and 26.55, respectively. Junior Bradley Helmick finished back in fifth to cap off one of the B-U boy’s swim team’s strongest events.

Bennett also turned in a dazzling performance by winning the boy’s 100-yard fly with a time of 57.21 seconds. While Bennett comfortably cruised to being the first to touch the wall, teammate Ormeno finished the event in fifth place with a final time of 1:16.01.

Fetty was the second to touch the wall in the girl’s 100-yard free, falling just a few seconds short of besting the winning time of 1:06.68, by posting a final time of 1:09.86. Senior Abby Loudin also nabbed a podium position, finishing the event in a time of 1:13.89 to nab third. Freshman Cate O’neill finished fifth with a time of 1:18.78, while freshman Elly Jeran wasn’t far behind, coming in sixth with a time of 1:19.26.

Junior Reis Leonard took home second in the boy’s 100-yard freestyle, posting a final time of 57.54. Leonard was one of only two competitors that finished the event in under a minute. Junior Bradley Helmick placed fifth with a time of 1:07.75, while senior Rhett Ammons finished seventh with a time of 1:11.45. 

Cadence Vincent’s dominance continued, as she won the women’s 500-yard free, beating out two other competitors with a final time of 5:13.61.

The B-UHS girl’s 200-yard free relay team for the 2021-22 season, consisting of Riley Vincent, senior Abby Loudin, Cadence Vincent, and Cameron Zuliani placed first in the event with a final time of 1:53.85. B-U’s second free relay team, consisting of sophomore Lillian Fetty, Elly Jeran, Cate O’neill, and Samantha Shay finished fourth after posting a final time of 2:14.26.

Next, Whitehair won the girl’s 100-yard backstroke with a final time of 1:05.18. Riley Vincent wasn’t too far behind Whitehair, earning a second-place finish with a time of 1:09.52. Abby Loudin rounded out B-U’s field 100-yard backstroke competitors, finishing back in fifth with a time of 1:26.59. 

In the girl’s 100-yard breaststroke, Cameron Zuliani took home first-place. Zuliani finished the event with a final time of 1:16.92, while Samantha Shay finished back in fourth with a time of 1:37.22.

In the boy’s 100-yard breaststroke, Bennett continued his strong holiday meet, taking second-place with a final time of 1:09.84. Reis Leonard finished right behind Bennett in the event, taking third place with a time of 1:14.71. Owen Caynor rounded out the B-U boy’s swim team’s 100-yard breaststroke field by claiming a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:21.26.

The girl’s 400-yard free relay team comprised of Whitehair, Fetty, Shay and Cadence Vincent took home a solid second-place finish with a time of 4:21.27, falling just short of the first-place time of 4:19.84.

Finally, the team of Ormeno, Leonard, Caynor and Bennett won the meet’s last event, the boy’s 400-yard free relay, with a time of 3:59.09 to close out the holiday quad meet in style, with a victory.
